Wilson, Hernandez take PD tennis titles
NEWPORT NEWS — Specializing in tennis hasn't been a necessity for this year's Peninsula District singles champions.
Denbigh senior Shelby Hernandez, who says her favorite sport is field hockey, completed the district "triple crown," gaining singles and doubles championships at Huntington Park after leading the Patriots to the regular-season team crown.
Hernandez defeated Bethel sophomore Chelsea Pittman 6-0, 7-5 Friday morning in the singles final, then joined Jessica Pineda to defeat Menchville's Nancy Sumner and Jenna Hixon 7-5, 6-3 for the doubles title.
The boys final's result was far more surprising. Menchville freshman Graham... [Read More]

Warwick, Kecoughtan share boys soccer crown
In boys soccer, Warwick and Kecoughtan won Thursday to complete 8-1 Peninsula District regular seasons and share the championship. They will meet in a playoff to be announced; it will decide who gains an automatic Eastern Region berth and the district tourney’s top seed.
Jamie Blinco scored on a penalty kick as Woodside ended Menchville’s bid to make it a three-way deadlock for first by tying the Monarchs 1-1. Anthony Lewallen’s goal in the final minute of regulation forced overtime for the Monarchs (11-3-2, 7-1-1), who will be the No. 3 seed. The Wolverines (7-6-2, 4-3-1) clinched a berth in the PD tournament. ...

Virginia Tech to host Division 5, 6 football title games
DAILY PRESS
Todd and Darling stadiums were among the candidates, but the Virginia High School League chose Virginia Tech's Lane Stadium as the host site for the 2008 Group AAA state football championship games.
The contests will be held Dec. 6, with the Division 5 game tentatively at noon and the Division 6 final at 4:30 p.m. Like in 2007, the games are scheduled to be broadcast on statewide television.
“Last year’s games at U.Va. afforded an exciting and first-class experience for all participants, and we are thrilled that fans of high school football will again have an ideal setting for their championships,” VHSL executive director Ken Tilley said in a release.
“We want our student-athletes to play in a big-time atmosphere and have an... [Read More]

Six resigns as Hampton coach
Hampton High girls basketball coach David Six stepped down Thursday, ending his 14-year reign with the Crabbers.
“Everybody gets to a certain point where it’s time to pursue different challenges,” said Six, who won his second Group AAA state title just last year. “That’s where I’m at right now.”
When asked if the “different challenges” included a college coaching position, Six replied, “Possibly.”
At Hampton, Six compiled a record of 331-93. He won two Group AAA state titles (2001, 2007), nine Peninsula District tournament titles and seven PD regular-season titles, and was named the Group AAA... [Read More]
