Why is Ronald Curry jersey number not retired at Hampton?!?!?!
I was reminded of this one day while watching Matt Mitchell play under center on Channel 48. I know he never became what he was suppose to become, but still he was the best high school athlete in the nation in some time.

I don't think Hampton has ever retired a jersey number. Certainly Curry's would be the one you would think.
That brings up an interesting question. What jerseys have been retired by Peninsula District schools? Several years ago, we had a weekly page called the Student Section, which was written by high school students. We profiled several schools and asked our correspondents to check with ADs for any retired numbers.
Let's open this up to everyone. What jerseys have been retired by various schools?

Bethel has retired Iverson's #10 in FB and #3 in BB, Shaun Gayles #81, and Todd Kelly"s #88 or they are atleast honored on the wall in their gym.

That is a good question! I don't think that a high school would retire the number, but the jersey I know get hung up. I knew about the jerseys at Bethel, but I'm not sure about anything else. Heritage has Aaron Brooks jerseys (football & basketball) above the doorway to their gym.

This is not football but there is not doubt about #3 being retired from Soccer at Kecoughtan - Chris Tromly

At Phoebus.....
#1, 3, and 6 will never be worn again.
Personally, if I see a #1 Phoebus Football Jersey, I might just take it off his back myself...

because Coach smith, doesn't retire anyones number... to include Dwight stephenson. Curry does have a nice little shrine type thing in the school.

I don't believe any of those Bethel numbers are actually retired. I've seen them all worn in recent years. Wasn't Joemel Dennis #1 at Phoebus?

If Hampton got in the practice of retiring numbers of player's that have gone through the program that truely deserve to have their number retired, there wouldn't be many numbers left for players to wear. Coach Smith isn't like most other coach's as most of us know. He doesn't believe in doing a lot of things that most would consider ordinary in the terms of football.
besides.. whats a retired jersey going to do for Hampton?

Not to bring back bad memories, but I was a little kid when this tragic event happened. Just wondering where exactly was he at when he was killed...was it in the North Phoebus townhouses?? Also, did they catch his killer?

Nah, I think that it was out in Southampton. The thing about it was, that he had on basketball shorts and didn't even have pockets, and they still tried to rob him. I can't remember for the name of me the other guy that was with him when he was robbed, but I know I used to play ball with him at the Center (North Phoebus Community Center). But yeah, they actually did catch the guys that did it. I actually remember playing ball with Jamel during an open gym run earlier that summer and was talking to him about a few things his game. He was actually a cool lil dude....
