DEEP RUN HIGH SCHOOL LEADS AFTER THE FIRST ROUND OF THE 4th VSGA FOUNDATION HIGH SCHOOL INVITATIONAL
MIDLOTHIAN –– Central Virginia-based Deep Run High School received three rounds of 73 or better from team members and own a four-stroke lead entering Wednesday’s final round of the 4th Virginia State Golf Association Foundation High School Invitational at Independence Golf Club (6,677 yards, par 36-36—72).

(Jamestown, the only Bay Rivers or Peninsula District team in the field, was tied for ninth at 318. Ben Meadows led the Eagles at 75.)

A public school located in Glen Allen, Va., Deep Run shot a first day score of 8-over-par 296. Charlottesville-area Western Albemarle High School is a close second (12-over 300), while nearby James River High School is in third place at 17-over 305. In the competition, the best four of five scores are counted toward the team’s aggregate.
Deep Run's Chris O’Neill posted the low round among competitors representing a team, carding 1-under-par 71. The 17-year-old rising junior recovered from an early double bogey after incurring a lost ball penalty at the par-5 fourth hole to shoot two under on the inward half. Though prevailing winds affected club selection all day, O’Neill was bogey-free on the second nine and knocked in birdie putts inside 4 feet at Nos. 10 and 13.
“On the back nine, the wind got tough,” he said. “Usually, it’s the easier side, but it made it play just as hard as the front. I just tried to stay focused and not worry about the [lost ball penalty].”
Also for Deep Run, junior Mikey Cantor (Glen Allen) and senior Jason Schumacher (Glen Allen) each had 73, while fellow senior Andrew Kowal (Glen Allen) shot 79 to post the Wildcats’ other scores. Deep Run has plenty of depth through its lineup and the squad already owns two tournaments wins and a 5-0 record in the Colonial district Central region.
The past three winners of the event have gone on to capture the Virginia High School League Group AAA Golf Championship, a tradition team members are trying to keep alive
“We definitely want to keep that going,” O’Neill smiled. “We’re fully aware of that. With Jason [Schumacher] and Andrew [Kowal] being seniors, this is probably their last chance, so we have to do it this year.”
Crozet-based Western Albemarle also features four upperclassmen, with junior Alex O’Dell, 16, of Crozet leading the team with a first-day 72. Three other team members shot a round in the 70s, including junior Brett Engle (74), senior Scott Wakeley (75) and sophomore Kent Miller (79).
“We have a good team and have some guys who can bring it, so we like our chances,” O’Dell said. “We have some people who can go low.”
Western Albemarle finished second in the Virginia High School League Group AA Golf Championship in 2009 and their appearance at the VSGA Foundation High School Invitational represents something of a proving ground for the program.
“We love coming to this tournament to see how we stack up against other AA and AAA schools,” said assistant coach C.T. Pace. “I’d like to think we have a shot to go far.”
James River didn’t start a senior in first round action, but still received four scores in the 70s. Rising sophomore Jason Park, 16, of Midlothian led the way, shooting even-par 72 by playing a six-hole stretch from Nos. 8-14 in four under par.
“I haven’t been playing well and have just been trying to get my swing fixed,” Park said. “I didn’t expect much coming into the event, but I did well [Tuesday]. I stayed patient most of the time.”
Among the competitors taking part in the event individually, two-time reigning Richmond Women’s Golf Association Amateur champion Lyberty Anderson (Chesterfield), a rising newcomer at Manchester High, and Shabril Brewer (Herndon), a rising senior at northern Virginia’s Westfield High, equaled the low round of the day, posting 2-under 70. Brewer helped Westfield to last year’s team title and is the only returning player from the squad.
Independence Golf Club, owned by the VSGA Foundation, features a 22,000-square-foot clubhouse, an 18-hole Tom Fazio-designed championship course and a nine-hole Sawyer Short Course, layed out by Fazio. In addition, the club includes separate junior clubhouses with dormitories for campers. The VSGA Foundation continues to champion junior golf initiatives, particularly those that benefit at-risk children. The club’s Robins Junior Program camps and clinics not only teach fundamentals of the game, but also empowering life lessons.
