Host Bruton, which finished 2-11 a season ago, improved to 2-0 by edging Walsingham Academy in penalty strokes. The Panthers posted a 2-1 triumph by outscoring the Trojans 4-3 in nine rounds of strokes -- the squads only converted one of their first five each.

Sierra Encarnacion scored off a corner pass to give Walsingham a 1-0 lead, but five minutes into the second half, Erin Madden scored her fifth goal of the season for the equalizer.

In strokes, Bruton's Gwen Trask scored on both of her attempts against Walsingham goalie Emily Jackson, who finished with 18 saves. Carley Shannon knocked in the game-winner.

Bruton goalie Katelyn McDonnell made 25 saves in a game that featured plenty of scoring opportunities both ways.

"They understand how to play as a team and have bonded into my philosophy on coaching the team," said Joe Dougherty, who's in his first season coaching the Panthers. He coached Walsingham through the 2008 season.

"We don't have superstars, we just have super kids."
