There were some really bad calls by the refs tonight. Tarpey would have had a 40 yard run in the 4th quarter but it was called back for an inadverdent whistle because they thought Gloucester handed the ball off. The coaches told the refs before the game that they run the option and to hold the whistle... Also Bethel had 2 players ejected and Gloucester had one.

OLD GHS.... yes the officials were terrible.... but you guys got the most calls, check the penalties and yards.... We got a touchdown called back for a block in the back... the official right on top of the play shook his head "No" when he didn't throw the flag, but another official 30 yards away threw his. The play where the ejections took place Bethel ended up with 4- 15yr penalties. The first ejection was warrented, the Bethel player threw a punch. The second Bethel player did nothing wrong, he pulled the bethel Player that threw the punch away from the incident. He was penalized for breaking up the scuffle.
I'll do a summary once I get organized but the bottom line is "UGLY UGLY UGLY"

Yeah I did think that was a weird call on that return, you all did end of scoring on that drive anyway though, so in the end the points still got on the board. And no matter how bad the refs are they did not lose the game for Gloucester.

This does have to be a step in the right direction for the Gloucester program to be competitive with Bethel. Heartbreaking way to lose but they opened some eyes tonight. Now the rest of the games may prove that Bethel is actually bad this season or Gloucester is competitive this season and no slouch.
Bethel is 4-0 and I always say good teams know how to win games and that's what they've done so far. Have to wait and see who they really are coming down the road with Hampton, Woodside, Warwick, and Phoebus still left to play.

Phoebus, I agree with you totally! I'm hoping Gloucester was on a "WIN HIGH" from last week. They looked good tonight on offense. The defense wasn't too hot IMO. After seeing K-tan and Heritage already and Gloucester tonight, I can see Gloucester beating both of them, I mean they had us on the ropes tonight. Our team (Bethel) won that game tonight on sheer heart and determination. We weren't "Better" we just won! THings are going to get tougher, with Woodside and Hampton in the near future, not to over look Denbigh (this Thursday). We can't expect to "steal" wins against the top teams...

Hello people im new so dont rip me to shreds...but I played at Bethel and I have seen gGHS teams better than I saw last night. The GHS team was by far not as good as this Bethel team. I have to disagre with you here. The difference was missed assignments on the defensive side. If you look at it GHS only ran 4 plays or three:
1. DIVE/ OPTION
2. QB DRAW/ READ DIVE OPTION
3. Roll Out Pass
These plays worked for the Dukes. The kid #11 hurt Bethel on three plays where he made some nice catches. Missed assignments in the secondary killed Bethel early. GHS gained the momentum with the interception. The GHS QB #15 is the best I have ever seen running the DIVE READ OPTION. He knows when to pull it and when to give it. A few times he had me fooled and clearly he had the referee fooled on the inadvertant whistle.
The Bethel Offense has improved from game 1 and I think the play of QB #6 in the last 3 games has been better than #9. I think he is stronger and knows the game a little better than #9. Bethel might need to look at picking a permanent starter at the QB position. Bethel has a receiving core that is the best i have ever seen since of course I was there...lol. They have yet to use the big #4 guy who by the way got called on last night a couple of times and made some really nice plays...including a 4th and 4 hitch play which kept Bethel alive in the 4th quarter with 2mins or so left in the game. #36 is a pure beast at tailback. He runs the ball hard and never gives up. I am impressed at the play of the O-line...When I played there that was our downfall.. we had all the talent in the world at the skill positions but couldnt keep the other team off of the QB.
Again Bethels special teams play boosted them. Had #24 not got in the endzone on the 2pt this game would have went to OT.
To put it all in perspective. the score was 28-14 at the half; however, in the second half Bethel outscored GHS 22-7. Which proves that Bethel (when they play together and get thier heads straight) is a better team than the team that showed up in the first half. And it was clear that Bethel has better athletes. however, better atheles cannot combat putting kids in the right places. a 10 year old can socre a touchdown in the NFL as long as the coach calls the right play. If you are in the right places and know how to play the game and are smart, then that's when a team like JMU can beat a team like Virginia tech.
Finally, Horrible calls all night. 2 BHS players got ejected one of which did nothing. after a punt from Bethel to GHS. The initial call was a late hit on a bethel player who was trying to recover a fumble by #11 of GHS.. Another BHS player got into a scuffle with a GHS player. The firstr punch was thrown by the GHS player to an unsuspecting BHS player who was trying to remove himself from the situation. However, after he was hit he retaliated and punched back. Bethel got smaked with penalties which were bogus. it was so bad that GHS declined one penalty that would have given them 10 yards. There were things done that I have never seen in football...which left me wondering if anyone out there knew the rules of football. It seemed the refs were on GHS side because bethel had 2 kickoff returns called back. it was an utter mess ; however, you have to expect that when you wear the green and gold. They are still mad that #10 the QB from '92 went on to be successfull...lol thats my theory and Im sticking to it!!

Well you cant count a team out. Just like GHS came to play BHS. BHS will come to play HHS and PHS. Any Given Friday or Sat or thurs...anyone can win!!! REMEBER Bethel dosent have to be a better team than Hampton or Phoebus all season. They just have to better than Phoebus and Hampton on the night they play them.

It was a bigger play than that..... if he doesn't get in they lose by 1, there wouldn't be an over time.
I will also disagree that Gloucester was in the game because of a few missed assignments.... A few missed assignments usually mean a couple of long runs or busted plays. I didn't see that... I saw Gloucester pound the ball over and over and just drive it right at us. They threw a few passes to keep us honest. Now when Bethel had to make stops with the game on the line they did! For that I'm happy!
I can't compare previous Bethel teams with this years team as this is my first year here in the PD. It's hard to judge this years team overall though, because I feel the passing game is their weakness....yet last night (in the second 1/2) they moved it through the air and they looked good doing it. I also agree with you that the back up QB for Bethel would be starting if I was coach, he gives us a lot more mobility and is just more effective.
Now as a Bethel fan, do I think we can play with Hampton and Phoebus, not from what I've seen thus far. Phoebus and Hampton have blasted the teams we're squeaking by. However! Do I plan on being there with all my Bethel attire on yelling and screaming at the top of my lungs, Most Definately! Bethel is scrappy but if they can play an entire game like they've played second halfs this year they are a pretty darn good team. The offense is getting better each and every game and sooner or later when they get that "Wake Forrest" offense figured out and they are clicking on all cylinders.....who knows!

Yea...I said missed assignments because clearly the secondary looked lost out there. #11 scored on 3 passes take two of those away and its a different ball game.
GHS did drive the ball down but if you remember Bethel stuffed them on 3 plays and gave up scores on on two 4th downs. As a matter of fact the first drive bethel suffed them for a loss 2 plays and gave up a first down with GHS in 3rd and long.. So I say it was a combination of missed assignments and the GHS coach calling the right plays putting his guys in the right spots. All the athleticism in the world cannot combat that.
The passing game is still shaky but #6 really stepped in and took control of the team. Again the receiving core is very talented. If this was the NFL I would say they have a Terrell Owens (#4), Donte Stallworth (#5), Deshawn Jackson (#12),And the ravens clayton (#7). It was a mismatch wherever #4 lined up.
In another post someone said Bethel dosent have the talent to run the offense they run. I disagree because the o-line play is the best Ive seen since Allen Iverson was playing there. #36 is a monster running back and the back-up is swift and elusive and he has hands. Tghe reciving core is extremly talented and #6 is not the greatest but he is decent and he is leaning he has a cannon and is pretty accurate.
Bethel, no matter what the record is, will get up to play hampton and phoebus. These games mean the most to the bruins. So they may not click like a 4-0 team against GHS but those nights they will...Just like last year, they clicked in the phoebus game but lost 14-17...but played a good game and should have won..

the referees were horrible. they lost the game for the dukes. the inadvertent whistle may have been a touchdown, bethels last touchdown had an obvious hold, so you can complain about the ejections but gloucester's bad breaks happened when the game was on the line.

Bethel had a touchdown called back for a bogus block in the back! They turned right around and scored again. Gloucester had an inadvertant whistle but he never scored anyway. When they tried again they couldn't even get a first down. As for this apparent "obvious holding" by Bethel on the last TD.... Bennett plowed over folks getting to the endzone, holding didn't help that. So Bethel (though sloppy) stepped up when needed! Blaming the refs gets you nowhere....

i firmly believe that if a team lets another team back into a game, they allow the referees to have too much power to control the game
The dukes had a 14 point lead with the ball twice and couldnt stretch it to three scores.
Tarpey would have scored a touchdown or at least a 30 yard gain on the inad. whistle. he was in the clear with a safety to beat for th TD

The bethel defense stopped pursuit after the whistle of course it looked like he was going to score... Smh the whistle was blown after the fullback was tackled which was at the point where the qb faked the handoff at the line of scrimmage. The qb hadn't even crossed the line of scrimmage yet.
