Great pitching boosts two PD teams to softball regional victories

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Warwick shut out Churchland 2-0 Monday morning in an Eastern Region softball quarterfinal on a one-hitter by Travonna Byrd on Princess Anne High's field -- and it was just the first of two stellar pitching performances of the day by a Peninsula District player.
Stephanie Coates pitched a no-hitter with 17 strikeouts to spark Gloucester to a 2-0 victory over Lake Taylor.
Churchland, the Eastern District champion, managed just one baserunner in seven innings against Byrd.
The Raiders, the regular-season and tournament runner-up in the Peninsula District, advance to Tuesday's 5 p.m. semifinal against Beach District No. 2 seed Kellam, which edged Southeastern District regular-season champion Hickory 1-0.
Gloucester will play at 7 p.m. Tuesday against Beach regular-season champion Salem, a 3-1 victor over Southeastern No. 2 seed Great Bridge.
Both finalists will advance to the state Group AAA tournament quarterfinals.
