The best girls basketball rivalry in the Bay Rivers District added another chapter to its increasingly entertaining history on Thursday.
Ebony Weddington buried a pull-up jumper from 17 feet with 8.0 seconds remaining to give visiting York a 38-37 season-opening win over Tabb. Weddington, a 6-foot senior, scored a game-high 20 points, but her game-winning jumper accounted for her only points of the fourth quarter.
Her basket was reminiscent of Tia Perry’s length-of-the-court drive a year ago for a layup to give Tabb a 42-41 victory in the district tournament championship game. Weddington made her drive with the Falcons trailing by a point, after grabbing the rebound when Tabb’s Emily Piazza missed the front end of a one-and-one with 15.1 seconds remaining.
Weddington did not go all the way to the hole – a la Perry, who now plays for Christopher Newport University – because she lost track of the time amid all of the excitement.
“I didn’t think there was enough time for me to get all the way to the basket,” said Weddington, who is leaning toward playing on scholarship for Division I Delaware State University. “I was nervous about the pull-up jumper, but I knew I was going to make it when I let it go.”
Following Weddington’s basket, the Tigers (0-1) drove down court and missed a 10-foot baseline jumper that would’ve won the game. The Falcons (1-0) closed the game on a 6-0 run in the final minute to snatch the victory.
The Tigers led 37-32 with 1:23 to go, after Piazza stripped Weddington of the ball and drove for a layup. The Falcons cut the lead to 37-34 with just under a minute to play on a layup by Brianna Daniel.
Weddington followed by blocking a Tabb shot to give York possession, but missed two 3-point attempts that would’ve tied it, before Jen Pandolf missed a shot. But Daniel rebounded Pandolf’s miss to cut the Tabb lead to 37-36 with 18 seconds remaining.
The Falcons fouled Piazza quickly to stop the clock with 15.1 seconds left. When she missed the free throw, Weddington drove down for the game-winner under heavy pressure.
Fact is, the Tigers put heavy defensive pressure on Weddington throughout the second half. Weddington scored 13 first-half points and Tabb’s Natalie Joseph eight as the teams were tied 21-21 at halftime.
That Tabb was right in the thick of it was impressive, because defensive ace Diana Kinney did not play. Kinney, a soccer star, did not play because she played missed some practices for playing in a soccer tournament overseas. …something Tigers coach Amber Thorckmorton said was understandable, but nonetheless required Kinney to sit because of team rules.
“We switched from a man-to-man and went into a 2-3 zone and did a fine job,” Throckmorton said of Tabb’s second-half defensive effort on Weddington. “I’m proud of the effort we gave.
“I don’t think York beat us. It was our own mental mistakes.”
Among those, Throckmorton said, was failing to box out on the late offensive rebounds York snagged, and trying to score while up three points on the shot that Weddington blocked with fewer than 30 seconds left.
The Tigers got good floor leadership from Piazza and a solid performance inside from promising freshman Brooke Mahan, who scored a team-high 12 points. The game was tied at 28-all heading into the fourth quarter, before Mahan scored five points and Piazza four to give Tabb a 37-32 lead with 1:23 left.
But York made the late run, and added another chapter to rivalry lore on Weddington’s shot.
“This is about what we thought,” York coach Tim Knapp said. “As young as my team is, we knew, especially at the beginning, it’s going to be a lot of Ebony, Ebony, Ebony.
“At the same time, the message to them is that we had two 10th graders (Daniel and Pandolf) hit pressure shots to pull us back in there. I don’t know what else to say about Ebony.
“I’ll probably be saying a lot about her this year.”
Said Throckmorton, "I know our girls are disappointed, but it's a learning experience for them. It wasn't a matter of us not playing hard or not wanting it bad enough - we just made some mental mistakes at the most crucial time.
"Ebony Weddington is a great player and she just came up and made a great play - just like Tia (Perry) did."

Marty, you're sounding suspiciously like a Tabb fan.

How so? That's one of the more unusual comments I can remember getting after a routine game story.

Considerably more info re: Tabb than York to start with. Perry is gone, so are Lewis and Blow, for that matter. So why bring Perry up in your article? The whole article appears to be slanted to Tabb, and that York just slipped in the last few seconds. Fact is, York led most of the first half, with Tabb only catching up at the end of the first half. The lead went back and forth from there. It was not a case of Tabb dominating the game, which your writing might lead some to believe. In the past, I've always thought of your writing as being pretty fair, not this time.

Honestly have no dog in this hunt. For game stories I just throw out what strikes me as interesting in the time I've got to write before deadline. If it feels slanted, it's just a coincidence.

I don't think it was great basketball on the order of some of last year's games. ...the teams are too young for that. But I thought it was entertaining and extremely competitive.

That's what I was trying to convey with bringing up another great game in the rivalry. Those games struck me as similar. ...the endings anyway.

Just a fun rivalry to follow for me. To me, the York final shot ending this year and the Tabb final shot ending last year were fun to cover. Doesn't really matter to me who wins it. ....I like the intensity and competitiveness of the rivalry. It's one of those things that makes the Bay Rivers fun.

I'll accept your explanation......just don't let it happen again:D

But I've got to say, it was really sweet watching that ball drop tonight.

And you are right, the girls are young, should be interesting to see how they're playing later in the season.

:pound:Apparently Marty doesn't have a firm grip on evaluating D1 Football talent either. LOL!

OK, seriously, I read Marty's write up three times. I swear, I couldn't pick up on a slant one way or the other. I thought the anecdotal lines added a little extra to the article. He could of given it a "Weddington drains a short jumper to take the lead and as time expires Tabb missed a 10 foot baseline jumper."...then added the box score, but then he would of been bombarded with the "No coverage" theory...looked liked good ink to me, and I have NO INTEREST in either one of those two teams. Sounds like it was a great game.

Well it's like Stother Martin said to Paul Newman about that "communication" thing in "Cool Hand Luke."

I could read that 10 more times and think it's more York oriented and a York fan could read it 10 times and see Tabb.

But that's the nature of this rivalry. ...to the players and fans it's all or nothing.

The Perry shot is a bad memory for York fans, like the Weddington shot will be for Tabb fans.

I'll remember them as two of the better girls hoops games I've covered in recent years. ...up there with the Bruton-Charlottesville state game and the Poquoson-Grafton district final.

I'm just glad to see this corner of the board warm up a little bit, even if the heat's on me.

Bay Rivers girls basketball doesn't quite generate the passion among fans as some of the other stuff I cover, but York-Tabb certainly does.

I have to admit, Marty may have not slanted the write up, but Tabb definitely could not take the loss as a "York beat them" this time. Not much credit was given to a scrapping YOUNG team! It was all about " we made mistakes at crucial times and lost the game". Get over it Tabb.

The York boys could say the VERY SAME THING about the boys game on the previous night. They had that game won through midway 4th quarter and let it get away from them. I dont see Tabb boys being number 1 with the play I saw opening night.
At least Coach Baggett has the class to admit he should have lost that one!

See your point, but I think Amber was just being honest. ....which I like.

Failure to block out, missed free throws and a couple of shots there was no need to take undid the Tigers, as she said. I guess young teams have to go through that learning experience in pressure situations.

York's pretty young, too, but they had the experienced veteran to turn to in the final seconds, Ebony Weddington, and that's the best person to have in the BRD right now. The York youngsters played without fear in the final minutes, and that was big, too.
