Poquoson reaches state softball tourney

Special to the Daily Press

NOTTOWAY -- Brandy Wyatt drove in the game's only run, and Sarah "Birdy" Evans pitched yet another gem to send Poquoson into the Group AA state tournament for the second time in three years.

Evans' one-hitter followed a two-hitter in the Islanders' regional quarterfinal victory over Nandua on Monday.

"She was really on," Poquoson coach Todd Bowden said. "She did a fantastic job. She kept them off balance." LaCara Hawkes smacked the first pitch of the game off Evans up the middle for a hit, but Evans shut down Nottoway from there.

Poquoson scored its only run in the third inning.

Laura Hanson was hit by a pitch to start the inning and moved to third on singles by Shannon Rollins and Taylor Walker. Wyatt hit a hard liner to deep left-center, sending Hanson home standing up.

"I'm thrilled for the girls," Bowden said of returning to state. "They have worked really hard. They deserve it."

where is the state tourny?

In the quarterfinals next Tuesday, the regional champion plays at home against the Region II runner-up and the Region I runner-up plays at the Region II champion.

Winners of those two games advance to the semifinals in Radford next Friday. The state championship is next Saturday, June 9.

Lynn, do you know who the perspective Region II candidates are? Do you any thing about these teams. I heard one of them is nationally ranked, is that true?

The Region II final is Fort Defiance against Broad Run tonight at 7. Broad Run is the top-ranked team in the Washington Post's area poll and has two players on the Post's All-Met team.

One is pitcher Caitlyn Delahaba, who was 20-0 during the regular season with 278 strikeouts and 11 walks.
