Game Highlights

Baseball is a funny game. Lafayette scored 26 runs in its previous two games and couldn’t come up with one yesterday against New Kent. In a well pitched game by both teams, New Kent beat Lafayette 1-0. Paul Jones started for Lafayette and took the loss in a complete game effort, allowing 0 ER and just 2 hits. Mathew Metheny picked up the victory for New Kent allowing only 3 hits and no runs. Dylan Walton pitched New Kent out of a major jam in the 6th ining to earn the save. Metheny methodically induced Lafayette hitters into hitting groundball outs or infield pop-ups. He retired eight of the first nine batters he faced. Lafayette had two good opportunities to score, but couldn’t. The first came in the 5th inning when Tyler Wiltshire singled to Left just after New Kent left-fielder Jason Downer made a nice running catch on a ball hit by Anthony Pietromonaco to lead off the inning. Wiltshire was thrown out at Second attempting to steal. With two out, Warren Atkins drew a walk on a full count, Emery Trott singled to left, and Paul Jones reached on an error by the New Kent SS. Casey Heikes grounded to the Second Baseman, who stepped on Second, to end the threat. Lafayette had a golden chance to score in the 6th when Solomon McCray led off the inning with a long double to LC. Adam Emerson walked and Dylan Walton relieved Metheny. Walton walked Luke Van Bergen to load the bases for Pietromonaco. He hit a 0-1 pitch back to the pitcher, for a 1-2-3 double play. Wiltshire walked to load the bases again for Graham Kennis, who was batting for Atkins. Kennis hit the ball sharply to the SS up the middle, who scooped up the grounder and flipped to Second to end the inning. Walton struck out the first two batters he faced in the 7th before Heikes worked out a walk. McCray popped-up to SS to end the game. Lafayette left 9 men on base in the game. New Kent threatened in the 2nd and 3rd innings before scoring the lone run of the game in the 4th. Hunter Pomfrey started the inning with a single to left. Eric Salmon laid down a nice bunt to move Pomfrey to Second with one out. However, Jones induced Walton to ground-out to SS, moving Pomfrey to Third, and then got Metheny to fly out to Center. With one out in the 3rd inning, Dakota Oxendine hit a long fly ball to left-center that just eluded Lafayette centerfielder Solomon McCray. Nick Valentino and Downer walked to load the bases. However, Lafayette catcher Anthony Pietromonaco picked off Downer at First, who was straying too far from the bag. Jones struck out Josh Stanley to end the threat. New Kent did score in the 4th inning without the benefit of a hit. Pomfrey walked and stole both Second and Third over the course of the next two batters, who failed to reach base. With two outs Metheny hit a hard ground ball that just scooted past the Lafayette Third baseman, scoring Pomfrey for what proved to be the decisive run. Lafayette right-fielder, Adam Emerson made an outstanding catch in the 6th inning on a soft fly ball to shallow right-center by Walton. The head-first diving catch followed a pre-game incident where Emerson ran full speed into the right-field fence attempting to make a play on the ball (gotta love the hustle!). Even though he was banged up a little on the play, the sunglasses I lent him were fine and that’s all that really matters.

I must say it is a bit of a surprise to see New Kent doing so well. I'm very impressed with this young ball club as I'm pretty sure no one expected them to be doing as well as they are. Kudos to their coach and players. Keep up the good work and make the BRD even more competitive than expected.
