Three Mathews High School teams play in state tournaments this week.
The soccer team won the Region A championship and plays a home match against Giles tonight in the state quarterfinals. Tonight’s match starts at 6 and the winner faces Region B champion Nelson County Friday in the state semifinals at Radford University.
The girls softball team finished as Region A runner-up. That means the Blue Devils play at Region B champ William Campbell today at 5. The winner also heads for Radford and a Friday afternoon matchup against the Powell Valley-John Battle winner.
Mathews’ girls tennis team already has a trip to Radford assured since only the regional team champion advances in tennis. The Blue Devils play Radford in the semifinals Friday morning, also at Radford University.
