Region A boys soccer teams split
Region A teams went 1-1 Tuesday night in the state Group A boys soccer quarterfinals.
Mathews, playing on its home field, defeated Giles of southwest Virginia 4-2.
The Riverheads Gladiators, a Shenandoah Valley team playing at home, ousted West Point 4-1.
Mathews' game was tied at 2 at halftime, but the Region A champion Blue Devils netted two goals in the second half to put away the Spartans.
Mathews will play at 2 p.m. Friday at Radford University in a semifinal against Region B champion Nelson County, which gained a first-round bye.
Riverheads led 1-0 at halftime, then scored twice early in the second half. The Pointers' only goal came with less than three minutes left.
The Gladiators will face Radford at noon Friday at Radford University.
