Mathews girls shut out by William Campbell

NARUNA -- William Campbell ended the Mathews girls softball team's season Tuesday night by shutting out the Blue Devils 6-0 in a state Group A quarterfinal about 20 miles south of Lynchburg.

Winner Amber Marstin (21-3) pitched a five-hitter and got offensive support in the third and fourth innings, when the Generals scored three runs apiece.

Melissa Hudgins took the loss for Mathews (19-8), the Region A runner-up. Tiffany Croxton went 2-for-3 for the Blue Devils.

Twin sisters combined for half of William Campbell's hits. Drew Rutledge was 2-for-4 and scored twice, and Dagen Rutledge was 2-for-3 with three RBI and a run.

William Campbell will play in Friday's semifinals at Radford University against the winner between Powell Valley and John Battle.
