Riverbend scored five second-half goals to defeat Cave Spring 5-0 and advance to the state Group AA final Friday afternoon at Radford University’s Patrick D. Cupp Memorial Stadium.
The first half was a defensive struggle, but Riverbend (16-0) struck early in the second half with an unassisted goal in the 48th minute by Carly Sullivan. Two minutes later, the Bears struck again when Casey Ridings scored off of a corner kick.
Another corner-kick goal in the 53rd minute, this one by Bailey Wilcox off of a Christine Kaila pass, gave the Bears a 3-0 lead less than 10 minutes into the second half.
Meredyth Faye assisted on two goals for Riverbend, one by Kirsty Meyer in the 61st minute off of a direct kick. Nikki Beer scored the final goal on a breakaway 20-yard shot.
Riverbend led shots 9-2 and corner kicks 7-2. Cave Spring (14-5-1) had three saves to the Bears' two.
Riverbend will face Region I rival Courtland for the championship Saturday at 10 a.m. at RU.
