Group AAA jamboree semifinal roundup

BASEBALL

James River 6, Forest Park 3

The losing team had twice as many hits as the winning team, but a pair of three-run homers was more than enough to advance the Rapids (25-2) from Chesterfield County to the Group AAA state championship game at Captains Park.

Austin Stadler and Chris Briere each went deep to virtually the same spot down the left-field line. Stadler's home run, his seventh of the year, erased a 1-0 Bruins lead in the bottom of the first inning. Briere's shot in the bottom of the fifth broke open a one-run game.

Forest Park (23-3) had 10 hits, including back-to-back doubles to begin the game. But the Bruins left nine runners on base and hit into two double plays. James River's A.J. Prill, a last-second starter, got the win despite giving up eight hits in four innings.

Deep Run 7, South County 6

The Wildcats (25-3) got away with five errors by scoring the winning run on a double-steal attempt in advancing to the Group AAA state final.

With the score tied 6-6 in the bottom of the fourth inning, Deep Run had Deck McGuire at third and Daniel Astrop at first with two out. With Matt Snyder at the plate, Astrop broke for second and South County catcher Justin Haas made the throw. Astrop then stopped midway between the bags and, as he dragged out a rundown, McGuire scored.

McGuire worked the final two innings on the mound to get the save.

The Stallions took a 5-0 lead in the top of the third, but the Wildcats came back with six runs in the bottom half of the inning. The key blow was Snyder's grand slam over the left-center field wall.

BOYS SOCCER

Osbourn Park 3, Cosby 0

Osbourn Park held Cosby without a shot en route to a semifinal win Friday at Christopher Newport. Matt Murgia led the Yellow Jackets (21-0-2) with a goal and an assist.
The Yellow Jackets held a 12-0 shooting edge.

Osbourn Park, ranked 11th in the nation by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, put the first-year Titans (15-7-1) away on goals by Eric Wooten in the 61st minute and Jared Bendy in the 71st minute.

The Cedar Run District and Northwest Region champions will face Jefferson of Alexandria in the final today at 1 p.m.

Jefferson 1, Cox 0

James Ramadan scored in the 57th minute as Jefferson of Alexandria won a physical contest. Ramadan had a shot rebound back to him, going top-shelf over Falcons goalkeeper Stephen Hersh.

Jefferson (16-1-5) outshot the Beach District runner-up 10-9, and Colonials goalkeeper Ariel Brown made five saves in the victory.

Cox (17-3-3) had plenty of scoring opportunities, but balls either missed the net wide or high, or the ball would wind up in Brown's hands.

Jefferson, the Northern Region champion for the first time in 30 years, will face Osbourn Park in today's final.

GIRLS SOCCER

Lake Braddock 2, Mills Godwin 1

Katie Dye broke a tie that had existed for more than 47 minutes when her 69th-minute header off a corner kick lifted Lake Braddock (16-3-2) of Northern Virginia past Mills Godwin (16-3-1).

Dye had missed on a header early in the first half.

This time, she was true.

From the corner, Rachel Nichols sent the ball into the middle of a crowd of players. Dye, one of the taller players on the field, rose above everyone and sent the ball past goalie Lindsay Rowe for the game-winner.

The team scored goals eight minutes apart in the first half.

Godwin struck first when Annemarie Cole took a crossing pass from Ashley Lewis and beat Braddock keeper Caitlin Landsman with 13:11 gone in the first half. The Bruins' Samantha Ciaravino tied the score at the 21:51 mark when she slammed home a pass by Mary Jacocks.

COX 1, CENTREVILLE 0
Chloe Russell's 20th goal of the season lifted Cox past Centreville and into today's state championship soccer match against Lake Braddock.

A victory by Cox (18-5-1) would mark the Eastern Region's second state championship in three years. Schools from Northern Virginia dominated from the first tournament in 1984 through 2004.

The Falcons lost 3-0 to Lake Braddock in last year’s final.

Russell's goal came with 7:55 left, on an assist by Bari Strangways. Centreville had botched a throw-in from near midfield. The ball would up in front of Strangways about 35 yards from the goal. She sent a through ball to Russell, who beat Centreville keeper Audrey Moore into the right side of the goal.

Centreville (16-3-3) had numerous chances, failing to covert on six corner kicks in the second half and seeing Cox keeper Kristen Carden stop Cate Tisinger from close in about 20 seconds after Russell's goal.

Carden sealed the victory by stopping a point-blank shot by Laura Yu with 10 seconds left in the match.

SOFTBALL

Hanover 4, Robinson 2
The defending Group AAA State Champion Hawks rode the 11-strikeout pitching performance of Lauren Brummell and a two-run single from Allison Worley in the bottom of the fifth to advance to today’s 2 pm state title game at Stoney Run Park.

Hanover (26-1) started the game with a run in the bottom of the first as Brummell walked and advanced to second on a Courtney Long single before scoring on a Julie Smith double. The Hawks scored another run in the third as Amanda Woolard scored as Jessie Atkinson grounded into a fielders choice forcing out Brummell.

After the Hawks went up 4-0 on Worley’s two-run single, the Rams finally cracked through on Brummell and scored a pair of runs in the sixth as Erin Henning doubled in Ali Marco and Marcy Bowdren.

Brummell was 2-for-2 with a pair of runs scored to lead the Hanover hitting attack, while five different Rams had a hit each for Robinson (21-7).

Kellam 1, Osbourn 0
The Knights avenged a 2005 State Semifinal elimination from the Lady Eagles by scoring a run in the fifth inning to advance to today’s championship game.

Jessica Sinnett reached first on an error to start the bottom of the fifth and advanced to third on a pair of sacrifice bunts before scoring on Kelli Porter’s single down the left field line for the lone run of the game.

Before that it was a pitchers duel between Stephanie Kemp of Kellam and Ashleigh Williams of Osbourn. Kemp struck out five and allowed six hits, while Williams only struck out one and allowed five hits.

Osbourn (24-4) had its best chance to start the game as Lori Botkin and Cindy Moore started the game with singles and Williams was intentionally walked to load the bases with one out. Kemp settled down and induced a fly out from Brittany Barlow and a strikeout of Nikki Peros to end the threat.

NOTE
With her second strikeout in the first inning, Hanover senior Lauren Brummell raised her career total to 400. She ended with 10 on the day and now has 409 for her career.
