Could some one explain how the High School/State Tournament works starting where the District Champion and Runner up is established. Do 1A schools end up playing AA schools? Is there only one state Champion?
Thanks for the help.

For the most part, each district sends its regular-season champion to the regional tournament as its No. 1 team, then the other team that finishes highest in the tournament goes as the No. 2 team.
From the regional, the two teams that reach the championship game advance to the state tournament. In softball, the two teams that reach the championship game advance to the state tournament.
In the state tournament, there are eight teams (two from each of the four regions) and the four regional champions play at home against the four runners-up. The usual quarterfinal pairings on Tuesday are geographical: The Region I champion at home against the Region II runner-up, the Region I runner-up at the Region II champion, etc.
Then the four winners go to the state tournament. And when it's all done, you'll have a Group A state champion, an AA state champion and an AAA state champ.
