Wallace III loses VSGA quarterfinal
Williamsburg’s Sam Wallace III lost 1-up Friday in a quarterfinal of the Virginia State Golf Association Junior Match Play Championship to Harrisonburg’s Stewart Surratt, who advanced to today’s final against Stanardsville’s Michael Moyers, 16, in Leesburg.
Wallace, seeded 29th of 32 qualifiers based on a medal-play round, beat two higher-seeded opponents Thursday to reach the final eight. But Surratt holed a 20-foot putt at the par-4 15th hole and sank a 4-foot birdie putt on the par-5 16th to gain a 1-up lead he would not relinquish.
In the semis, Surratt rolled past Floyd’s Michael Wade 6 and 5, and Moyers edged Tyler Chandler of Stafford in 20 holes.
