I notice that the VHSL schedule shows that the BRD teams are playing 9 district games only. Lafayette, Southampton, Bruton and Smithfield are playing a non-district opponent, while the other 6 teams are matching up with the lone district opponent not on their district schedule (if that makes any sense at all). How did they decide which one opponent would not be played for a district game and why did they do that in the first place? Anybody know?

I was confused as well on this but this is how it was explained to me: With the addition of War Hill this year several schools wanted to keep playing thier rivalry games that they have had for a while. So those teams that wanted to keep those games dropped one disrict game. The district standings are going to be based on 9 games vs 10. How they determined who they would drop I don't know and I don't know if this is a permanent of just for this year.

All of our games are BRD but I think Poquoson counts doesn't count as a district game or whatever

The BRD makes out the district schedual of 9 games. Schools are responsible for game 10. The team you are not playing will rotate on 2 year contracts. Only 9 games count toward district play however game 10 does count for power points.

At least that's how it was explained to me.

Any idea on how they came up with which team to drop or what game would not count as a district game? Reason I ask is someone mentioned that the Tabb/Grafton game was a none district game. Having two of the power houses play a non district game seems odd. Jamestown mentioned Poquoson as thier non district game, doubtful that game will have the same impact on the district standings as Tabb/Grafton will. In fact if I were Jamestown I would want that game to be a district game. Not knocking anyone but if you can avoid playing one of the top 3 or 4 as a district game it has to be an advantage when it comes to the district standings at the end of the year. Realize that it has no bearing on power points or state but somehow it seems a little out of whack. Especially if it last for two years. Reminds me of the situation in the Big 10,( realize thats college) but it has been questioned as practical and fair for several years.

My guess on Tabb/Grafton is gate receipts.

Of the two times that Tabb and Grafton play, one of them will count towards district titles.

As far as playoffs are concerned, both games count for Powerpoints.

GHS, you seem to have a little bit of a grip on how this was done. Any idea on how district games that will be non district match ups were selected?

I really don't know for sure how the games were picked. I have been told that Smithfield wanted to keep there out of district rivalry game with Surry & Southampton wanted to keep theirs with Franklin. Theses games are to be played instead of the Smithfield & Bruton and the Southampton & Lafayette games. So Lafayette picked up the game with Courtland and Bruton picked up the game with Park View.

My guess is to balance the district as far as in or out of the district games, that one of the games for each team has to be an out of district game. 9 in district and 1 out of district game for all teams. Grafton, Tabb, Poquoson, York, Jamestown, Warhill, and New Kent will play all the other teams from the BRD, but 1 of the games will be called an out of district game.

I think it would have been better to have a preseason benefit game instead of breaking up the district. But that's just my opinion.

I tend to agree. Just ran this threw my head and unless I screwed up this is how it is going to work this year. You named Smithfield, Bruton, laffeyete, and SH non district games. Tabb/Grafton is a non district. JTown and Pouq. is a non district. That leaves NK, York, and WH. Assuming that 2 teams play each other that leaves one team playing someone as a non district game for them but a district game for the opponent. You lose you lost a non district game but they won a district game. Man I am confusing myself. You give it a try and see if you come up the same way. I have done it twice and it still comes out screwy. Preseason game, definetley the ticket.

According the the VHSL schedule posted on the website the out of district games are:

Bruton and Park View
Jamestown and Poquoson
Lafayette and Courtland
New Kent and York
Smithfield and Surry
Grafton and Tabb, this game is not marked out of district, but makes sense.

Here's where it gets crazy...

Warhill and Southampton
Southampton with both Franklin and Warhill
My best guess is the Warhill game is going to be called out of district for Warhill, not Southampton. The Franklin game is Southampton's out of district game.

And to think, I thought Ohio State not playing Wisconsin a year or so ago was screwed up (LOL) Based on last years district standings with the exception of Tabb/ Grafton looks like the middle half to bottom of the district gets to beat up on each other in non district games. This is going to be interesting to see how this pans out by the end of the season. I can already here the arguments! :tape2:
