HRVarsity Two-a-Days: Landstown

2006: 8-2, third in Beach District.
Coach: Steve Canter, second year.
School colors: Royal black, silver and white.
School phone: 468-3800.

Fun fact: Wide receiver/defensive end Xavier Boyce is drawing Division I interest, mainly from Virginia Tech and Auburn.
Key game: Sept. 7, @ Tallwood; Tallwood beat Landstown 20-6 last season, a loss that ultimately kept the Eagles out of the playoffs. The road to the Eastern Region could very well go through the Lions again this year.

Aug. 30 -- vs. Kellam, 7:00
Sept. 7 -- @ Tallwood, 7:00
Sept. 14 -- @ Green Run, 7:00
Sept. 20 -- vs. First Colonial, 7:00
Sept. 28 -- BYE
Oct. 5 -- @ Princess Anne, 7:00
Oct. 12 -- vs. Cox, 7:00
Oct. 19 -- vs. Bayside, 7:00
Oct. 26 -- @ Kempsville, 7:00
Nov. 2 -- vs. Ocean Lakes, 7:00

2006 results:

OFFENSE:
Allen Powell debuts at quarterback this year for the Eagles, moving from his wide receiver position of a season ago. Taking Powell's place at wideout? Last year's quarterback, Xavier Boyce. Though the move is designed to open up the offense, the Eagles will look to an experienced horse in the run game. Sterlin Phifer was an all-district running back for Landstown last season, and he hopes to repeat that performance on a team that scored nearly 25 points a game last season. Joaquin Rogers and Niko Carlson anchor an offensive line expected to give Phifer -- and Powell -- support and protection.

DEFENSE:
Tim White, Tyler DiMotto, Boyce and Marquis Bowyer are the names Canter throws out first when talking of the defense. Boyce and Bowyer are quick and athletic in the defensive backfield, with Boyce playing defensive back when he's not on the other side of the ball as a wide receiver. White's main contribution, Canter says, is his experience. "Tim's one of our older guys; he's played a ton for us," Canter said. The Eagles only gave up 11 points a contest last season, with Tallwood and Salem the only teams to put up more than 10 against Landstown's aggressive -- and experienced -- defense.

OUTLOOK:
Landstown has more experience than it did in 2006 -- much like just about everyone else in the Beach District -- but is also a really young team. Canter calls it an odd dynamic, being at once so young yet so experienced. But given how the team went 8-2 last year and was a loss to Tallwood away from making the playoffs, confidence runs high on Concert Drive. Canter quickly dismisses the notion that his team has a better shot at the playoffs because of the expanded field -- four slots for the district this season -- saying instead that he feels his team is playoff-bound even with the two slots handed out a year ago. But, like everyone else, Canter says, "we've obviously got a ton of work to do ... but we feel good about some of the talented players we do have."

We'll get there. Our reporters are out talking to coaches and players now. We jumped ahead on the Southside schools since the Beach District teams open a week earlier than everybody,

HRvarsity will cover schools on both sides of the water this fall.
