(Hey gang: Our preseason section comes out Aug. 29, but there’s no reason we can’t provide some updates over the next 2+ weeks. Some of it you might know, some of it you might not. So between now and Opening Night, we’ll try to throw out a nugget or two on everybody. As always, feel free to comment or ask questions).
BETHEL STILL GOING WITH TWO QBS … FOR NOW
At least officially, new Bruins coach Jeff Nelson is saying the race between juniors Teddy BaCote and Aris McGlone-English to be the starting quarterback remains wide open. And it’s likely to stay that way, he said, until the days leading up to Bethel’s opener against Granby on Sept. 1.
Both played and started last season, though neither had much success in the air. Together, they completed 38-of-115 passes (33 percent) for 387 yards with 10 interceptions. Bethel was the only team in the district to not score a touchdown by air.
"It needs to get better," Nelson said. "We want to be 50-50 (run vs. pass), and we have to make that happen. As anybody will tell you, you have to get the run working if you want to pass, and you have to get the pass working if you want to run. Some games we’ll be 80 percent run, and some games we’ll be 80 percent pass."
Some coaches believe you have to have one set quarterback, while others see nothing wrong with using two. Count Nelson in the former category.
"To me, you can only have one on the field," he said. "My philosophy is, you need to have one you’re comfortable with, and if you change it, you end up changing the whole offensive chemistry. I think you need one to have that offensive identity."
