Newport News -- It didn’t take Woodside long to show off what may be its latest 1,000-yard rusher.

Junior halfback Josue Camsmith carried the ball on eight of the Wolverines’ first 13 plays, eventually putting up two touchdowns and 151 rushing yards on 26 carries as Woodside coasted past Denbigh, 34-14, at Todd Stadium on Thursday.

“(Camsmith) ran the ball well for us as a backup last year, and I expected the type of performance I saw tonight,” said Woodside coach Danny Dodson.

Woodside dominated the first half, pounding out 197 rushing yards while holding Denbigh to just 97 yards.

But after going into the half down by 10, the Patriots pulled to within three on an 11-yard scoring strike from Jazz Holiday to Jodey McNeill in the second half.

McNeill led the Patriots with 113 yards on 21 carries, and Holiday finished 7-of-17 for 76 yards.

The Patriots then held Woodside to a three-and-out, but a muffed punt return allowed the Wolverines to recover the ball on Denbigh’s 15, and Camsmith scored on a 1-yard dive six plays later.

“We wanted to come out and run the ball well tonight, but we’ve still got some blocking sets that we’re going to get better at,” said Camsmith. “Winning like this was a lot better than what happened last year, when it went down to the end before we won by just two.”

A fumble and a dropped fourth-down pass on the Patriots’ next two possessions ended any threat of a comeback.

“We gave up a lot of yards, but capitalized on some turnovers and did what we wanted to do,” said Dodson. “But starting off 1-0 is obviously better than 0-1.”

The game was delayed more than 20 minutes in the first half when line judge George French collapsed on the field and was evacuated by ambulance. Attempts to find out more news about French were unsuccessful.
