The bad news: Warwick senior Melissa Diskin had to default her No. 1 singles and doubles finals in the Newport News Invitational tennis tournament Saturday to attend the Tidewater Science Fair at Old Dominion University.
The good news: She won first place in the senior division with a report detailing the impact of pharmaceuticals leaking into the water supply, according to her mom, Warwick coach Alison Slattery.
Diskin hasn’t decided on her college yet, but it will be a good one.
She is considering the Massachusetts Institute of Technology — where she has been accepted — as well as Columbia and the University of California in Berkeley.
Diskin wasn’t the only player to default due to the science fair, an annual event that includes presentations from all over Hampton Roads. But, defaults or not, Jamestown looked impressive in sweeping the boys and girls tennis crowns at Huntington Park.
