Gloucester's Doug Fenstermacher finished first among 49 runners in the boys A division race in the Newport News Invitational, sparking the Dukes to second place behind Maggie Walker Governor's School.

Fenstermacher finished the 5-kilometer distance in 16 minutes, 9 seconds Saturday, beating runner-up Orlando Burton of Heritage by 20 seconds. Maggie Walker had 37 points, Gloucester 69 and third-place Menchville 82.

Meanwhile, Gloucester's Hannah Varnell won the A girls division in 18:43. The Dukes were second with 72 points, while Maggie Walker won with 24.



In boys B, Norfolk Academy's David Rushing won in 17:15, and more Maggie Walker runners combined for the team championship.

In boys C, William Mulherin won in 16:40, propelling Tabb to the team championship.

In girls B, Bethel's Ariana Betts ran a 20:45 for first place. Maggie Walker, blessed with superior depth, edged Peninsula Catholic 32-33 for the team crown.

In girls C, Tabb easily won the team title and Walsingham Academy's Caroline Wilke won in 20:27.
