Two Gloucester runners won individual championships in the top divisions of the Newport News Invitational cross country meet Saturday at Newport News Park.
Doug Fenstermacher ran 16:09 to win the boys ‘A’ title by 20 seconds over Heritage’s Orlando Burton. Hannah Varnell ran 18:43 to win the girls ‘A’ race by four seconds over Clarissa Shick of Maggie Walker Governors School.
Gloucester coach Heidi Overbay was effusive in her praise of Fenstermatcher and Varnell.
“As impressive as Douglas has been, I still believe he has a lot of untapped potential,” she said. “I really look for him to make a statement this year at the invitationals, regionals and state meet.”
As for Varnell, Overbay said the junior “looks to be stronger and more confident as the new leader of the Lady Dukes squad. Her experience as an elite runner is evident as she is really starting to take charge on the race course this year.”
Gloucester’s Emily Webb, who graduated in June, won four consecutive Peninsula District individual championships.
