Kecoughtan holds off Dukes in rain

By Daniel Maher | HRvarsity.com Correspondent

GLOUCESTER -- Kecoughtan scored the game’s only touchdown on a pass early in the third quarter, and the Warriors went on to beat Gloucester 7-0 Friday night in a Peninsula District game.

On the fourth play after the second-half kickoff, quarterback Anthony Dorsey connected with William Tate for a 54-yard touchdown.

Kecoughtan (1-2 overall, 1-1 district) then turned to its defense, led by Tate, who intercepted two passes.

Gloucester (1-2, 0-2) got to the Warriors’ 4-yard line midway through the fourth quarter, but Deonte Bracey stopped Dukes’ quarterback Tommy Reamon Jr. on fourth down. Later, Tate intercepted his second pass in the end zone with under a minute left to play.

"They just outplayed us. No excuses," said Gloucester coach Tommy Reamon Sr. "We weren’t the same team as last week. That’s sad."

Gloucester had beaten Norview 35-20 last Friday.

Rain fell throughout the game, causing problems on the soggy field. In the first half, Gloucester had 16 yards of total offense. Kecoughtan finished with 74, but 61 came on a non-scoring run by Dorsey.

Tate stepped up because linebacker Derek Mayo suffered a first-half injury and didn’t return.

"We’ve been right there in the first two games," said Kecoughtan coach Glen Tidwell. "It’s just mental mistakes and turnovers that have killed us."

Gloucester’s Ray Harris, who ran for 177 yards against the Warriors last year, had only 30. He’s suffering from a thigh bruise.

kecoughtan was sloppy on friday against gloucester, but clearly they were the better team.kecoughtan has a lot of talent and they need a coach who knows how to utlize that talent.

Coaches can't play the game for the kids, all they can do is train them what to do. If the kids make mistakes (ie. fumbles, offsides, false starts...which have killed KHS thus far), it's not the coaching, it's the kids not doing their jobs correctly. They need to buckle down and stop making those mistakes and then they would be unstoppable.

Apparently SOMEONE doesn't know how to run the 3-5-3 defense!! It's already being run successfully in the PD, it just has to be run correctly.

The dukes defence sure was up tot the task, but the offence was unable to help. Five turnovers by the qb doesnt help matters.

Anyone have any idea why the dukes would run qb sweeps three times from inside the ten?
I didnt see anything previously that would lead me to believe that play would work. . .

Tough one next week too, good luck dukes
