Kecoughtan renamed its field hockey facility Tromly Field in a surprise ceremony between Monday’s varsity and junior-varsity games.

Gene Tromly, father of several former athletes at the school, was honored for his numerous contributions to Kecoughtan over the years. Athletic director Lee Martin said Tromly helps out with almost everything around the school.

This includes painting, working with the golf team, buying supplies, helping with field maintenance, working on tractors and running errands.

"This is all on a voluntary basis and for the love of the Kecoughtan Warriors that he does this," Martin said. "So for that, we wanted to dedicate the field to him. It’s a true blessing for us."

Tromly was coming back to the school after a golf match when he was rerouted to the field hockey games to be honored.

"I didn’t know what was going on; I had no idea," Tromly said. "I looked up at the scoreboard and there was a covering on the top of it. They unveiled this thing, but I had no idea."

Tromly said he helps out or pays for things here and there, but nobody had to name anything after him. "I’m like an honorary custodian, I guess," he joked.
