NEWPORT NEWS — Either from his spot in the third-base coaching box or his team’s dugout, Warwick High coach Jimmy Dawson shouted the words “work hard!” to his players approximately 394 times. It was a simple command, one the Raiders easily followed on a sunny Thursday afternoon.

Twenty-four hours after blanking Kecoughtan, Warwick cruised to a 20-3 victory over Denbigh that assured the Raiders of at least a share of first place in the Peninsula District standings going into spring break. The Raiders pounded out 11 hits, but mostly took advantage of eight Patriot errors and numerous wild pitches/passed balls.

“We want to work hard on every pitch and every play,” Dawson said. “And everybody kept their focus in the later innings, which is hard to do.”

He didn’t say “in a one-sided game like this,” but he could have. Warwick (6-2, 6-1 district) led 5-0 going into the bottom of the second inning, which was more than what pitcher Tra Byrd would need. The Raiders made things ugly by scoring 14 runs in the final three innings, which led some Denbigh fans to grumble that Dawson was running up the score.

Dawson disputed that, saying “I don’t care what the score is.”

Warwick, which leads Gloucester by a half-game, got three hits from third baseman — and No. 9 hitter — Ashley Trumble. Shortstop Alex Ward and second baseman Sarah Atkins had two hits each, and Atkins drove in three runs.

Byrd (4-0) had a no-hitter going until Rachel Gostomski led off the sixth inning with a single up the middle.

Warwick = the most talented group of girls playing softball in the Peninsula District, hands down. Gloucester = the most highly touted group of girls playing softball by the daily press. Who will win the rematch between the two? Which all district pitcher pitched for Warwick in the opener, Atkins or Byrd and who will get the rematch?
