NEWPORT NEWS — Woodside’s offense throws so many different looks at you. One minute the Wolverines are in a Single Wing, the next they’re in a Wing-T. And then, just like that, a spread.
Heritage adjusted to it all in a 10-0 win at Todd Stadium Friday night.
"It can be real hard, and if you look in their backfield you’ll only get confused," quarterback/linebacker David Searcy said. "You have to do your assignment and keep playing. They used three different formations tonight, but we were prepared — real prepared. You see the scoreboard."
If you like lots of numbers and offensive highlights, this wasn’t your night. The Hurricanes (4-0, 3-0 Peninsula District) moved the chains on their first two plays from scrimmage and took a 3-0 lead on Jake Anderson’s 27-yard field goal less than four minutes into the game. But even though it took plenty of snaps in Woodside territory, Heritage wasn’t able to score again until Searcy’s 24-yard touchdown pass to Damion Jones with 4:54 left in the game.
Tailback Richard Anthony was held to a season-low 97 yards, but Searcy picked up 122 on 15 carries. He also completed 5 of 10 passes for 62 yards and a touchdown, in addition to playing a solid defensive game.
"He’s a warrior," Hurricane coach Jason Robinson said. "He understands the offense and the defense, and he’s a great football player."
Though Heritage was penalized 12 times for 93 yards, the biggest flag of the night came against Woodside (2-2, 1-2). Trailing 3-0 at halftime, the Wolverines got a boost when Najee Curry returned the kickoff 55 yards to the Hurricane 39. On the next play, Woodside quarterback Aaron Evans hit Robert Holland with a perfect deep throw for a touchdown. Or so it appeared.
Instead, the play came back because of a hold. Rather than being ahead 7-3, the Wolverines still trailed and faced a first-and-26 from its own 45. They went three and out.
"That hurt," Woodside coach Danny Dodson said. "That was a momentum changer. To go from a touchdown to first-and-26 …"
Woodside moved to the Hurricane 21-yard line in the third quarter. But after a weird exchange — Evans lost 25 yards on a fumble, but Heritage fumbled it right back during the return — the Wolverines had a first down back at their 47. Evans was intercepted two plays later, one of five Woodside turnovers.
"You’re not going to win many games with (five) turnovers," Dodson said.
The Hurricanes had their chances to put the game away. Late in the first half, they had first-and-goal from the 5-yard line. But on fourth down, Anthony was stuffed at the 2.
"It was very frustrating, but that sometimes happens in games like this," Robinson said. "That’s when the defense has to step up, and we were able to get that."
