Dorsey sparks Kecoughtan to win

HAMPTON — Quarterback Anthony Dorsey set up Kecoughtan’s eventual game-winning touchdown pass on a spectacular play late in the first half against Menchville. He added an interception with two minutes left in the game to kill the Monarchs’ last drive in a close one.
Dorsey, a sophomore and first-year starter, made steady progress as the Warriors bested Menchville 13-10 in their home opener Friday night at Darling Stadium.
"Anthony’s starting to see the field a lot better, slowly but surely," said Kecoughtan coach Glenn Tidwell. "I can’t wait to see what he’s going to be like when he’s a senior if he keeps getting better like he’s doing."
Kecoughtan (2-2, 2-1 Peninsula District) scored all its points in the first half and held on as Menchville (1-3, 0-3) chipped away in the second. Dorsey completed 7-of-12 for 133 yards and was intercepted twice.
With a little more than a minute left in the first half, he dropped back to pass and was swarmed by Menchville defenders. Just as he looked to be doomed to a sack for a bad loss, Dorsey scrambled away and looked downfield to connect with Greg Richardson for a 48-yard completion down to Menchville’s 11-yard line.
A play later, Dorsey completed a 6-yard touchdown pass to Grant West. After the extra point try was blocked, Kecoughtan led 13-0.
"I’m trying to learn how to be a better quarterback," Dorsey said. "I know I can run, but I’m trying to learn to pass more, too. So I just was patient and waited for him to get open, and made a play."
Menchville scored on its first two possessions of the third quarter, the second time on a field goal off of an interception that set the Monarchs up on Kecoughtan’s 23-yard line, to make it 13-10.
Menchville recovered a fumble with 5:42 left, but the Monarchs ended up punting. Dorsey intercepted Menchville quarterback Clifton Richardson, a freshman who started and played the whole game, on the first play from scrimmage of the Monarchs’ next possession.
"I played my coverage and the team had my back, and the ball just came over top and I caught it," Dorsey said.
Kecoughtan was without linebacker Derek Mayo, who had sprained an ankle a week earlier. Tidwell said he could have played, but felt some extra rest might help. Fellow linebacker William Tate added an interception to the two he made a week earlier for Kecoughtan.
Kecoughtan missed a field goal, but held Menchville to 94 yards of offense. Tidwell said an offense that’s heavy on very young skill players is improving.
"But the defense has just kept us in. They did it the first two games that we lost when the offense couldn’t get going," Tidwell said. "And they keep doing it week after week, so I’m extremely happy with it."
Kecoughtan has won two straight and plays Denbigh on Saturday.
"I told them that if they play a full 48, we’ll beat anybody we play," Tidwell said. "It was huge to come out in front of our home fans, family and schoolmates and win. I can’t wait to see how they come out Monday."
