York wins second straight

By MELINDA WALDROP | mwaldrop@dailypress.com ¦ 247-4634

YORK - As a first-year head coach, Doug Pereira is still working out some of the kinks in communicating with his new team, a process evident Friday night when play-calling confusion led to costly penalties in York’s game against Southampton.

He’s also charged with getting the Falcons to believe in his philosophy and in themselves, and that transformation was also on display as York pulled away in the second half for a 26-13 victory. The win was York’s second straight and improved the Falcons to 2-1 overall and 2-0 in the Bay Rivers District.

"There’s definitely a transition process that they have to go through," Pereira said. "Fortunately for me they bought into our system early, and even with the loss in the first game, they still felt we were OK where we were."

York had to keep that even-keel approach several times on Friday. The game’s first points came courtesy of a York fumble that Southampton recovered at the Falcons’ 45. Six plays later, Jamod Winborne punched in a 4-yard touchdown.

And two Falcons drives were derailed by penalties. At the end of the first half, York came away with no points after having first-and-goal at the 2 before an illegal shift began a backward march. The Falcons then took the opening drive of the third quarter to the Indians’ 6, but had to settle for a field goal after a delay of game.

"If we get the opportunity, we should score," junior quarterback Aaron Edwards said. "But the line played well and we executed, so there was really nothing to be upset about."

Especially not after Edwards hooked up with Chris Lloyd on a wide-open seam route off a picture-perfect play-action fake for a 29-yard touchdown and a commanding 23-13 lead with 1:13 left in the third quarter.

Edwards finished the night with 164 yards and two touchdowns on 8-of-15 passing, and added a 44-yard, defender-freezing quarterback keeper that tied the game at 13 as York twice fought back from one-touchdown deficits.

"It just gives us fire, knowing that if we do our job, we know the offense is gonna do their job," said sophomore linebacker Andrew Watt, whose blocked punt set up York’s final score, a 25-yard field goal with 4:30 to play. "It just gives us more energy and gets us hyped and ready to go."

Both teams employed an effective rushing attack, as York rolled up 162 yards and Southampton (0-3, 0-2 BRD) piled up 195. But the Falcons figured out Indians quarterback Sidney Rawls’ sneaky shifts and option keepers in the second half.

"They were bringing everybody," Southampton coach Littleton Parker said. "It’s hard to run on a team that’s got nine people in the box up there. It’s hard to run, and they were getting so much penetration, it was hard to throw the football."

The Indians went up 13-7 two minutes into the second quarter on Winborne’s second TD on his second touch, this one a 2-yard run. But after Edwards’ TD tied the game, George Koliopoulos’ 28-yard field goal gave York the lead for good with 5:58 left in the third quarter.

"They understand where they are now," Pereira said "They understand that we can finish the game."

York stayed focused, even after trailing much of the first half, and several scoring opportunities fell short. They made adjustments on defense and once they had possession, they started to click offensively. Nice game Falcons!
