Jamestown wins Region I golf title

Jamestown carded a team-best score of 628 to win the Region I golf championship at Pendleton Golf Course in Caroline County.

Tabb's Nicholas Swenson (152) finished second to Powhatan's Tyler Kee (149) among individuals. Powhatan (643) finished second in team competition.

The top two teams and the next top six individuals qualify for the state tournament at Fincastle Country Club in Bluefield on Oct 8 & 9.

Jamestown's Victoria Newberry took third place and teammate Bryan Giles (156) was sixth.

Kyle Hudgins (160) and Chase Huffman (161) both qualified for New Kent.

Meanwhile, in the Eastern Region golf tournament in Virginia Beach, Cox junior Brinson Paolini (137) won the gold medal and Cox (283) won the team title at Red Wing Lake Golf Course.

The best Peninsula district team was Warwick (642) in sixth place, as no PD golfers or teams qualified for next week's state tournament in Haymarket. The top PD finishers were Gloucester's Cole Tomlinson and Menchville's Sean Gatz at 159.
