View Full Version : Hampton may be guilty of chop blocking?

I read on a recent thread on this board (Midseason All PD Team) I believe, someone posted that the Hampton have been chop blocking a certain player from Woodside (#78). I kinda of doubted it myself and so I looked it up on hsgametime.com and viewed the video for myself and what did I see? Well at the 1:06 mark there was indeed a chop block as wellas an attempted chop block near the 2:00 min both were trying to block #78. I must say that I am very disappointed because I expect much more from Mike Smith than to allow that to go on. That type of blocking should not be tolerated at all. That could result into a career ending injury. Well enough talk here's the link:

I watched the video and I don't believe it was an illegal chop block. The VHSL football rules clinic powerpoint presentation
http://www.vhsl.org/fbpowerpt07.ppt#350,52,Slide 52
shows that between the tackles a block can cut the defensive player as long as he does not retreat (as in a pass block) and stays in the free block zone.
My interpretation of the free block zone is that for down linemen between the tackles, cut blocks and clipping are permitted as long as both players started from inside the zone and contact occurs immediately inside the zone.
I am not an official but from the rules presentation it looks legal.

I also believe that it states that the defender cannot be engaged with two offensive lineman - ie double team, one hitting him high one hitting him low. I don't like any kind of chop blocking personally, if you aren't man enough to man up on your man and take care of business find another sport to play....that's just my PERSONAL opinion. I'll tell you something else that I've seen SEVERAL times this year....pulling guard out front, outside the tackle - LB runs up and cuts the pulling guard below the waist, physically diving at the knees? That's cheap a$$ bush league stuff in my estimation.....have only seen a flag for it called one time.
Back to topic - VHSL does allow it....wish that it was banned though.

Looked at both plays and both are legal. This is not a "VHSL" rule but from the National Federation of High Schools rule book.
The "free blocking zone" is created by the ball and 4 yards to either side and 3 yards towards each goal line. In the free blocking zone, players are allowed to legally block below the waist, in the back, or clip. Stipulations are that both players must be on the line (defense within 1 yard of the ball) at the snap, the offensive player must be stationary at the snap, the block must occur within the zone and the zone must still be intact. The zone is no longer intact once the ball has left the zone. The only block that is illegal in the zone is a DELAYED block, at or below the knees, while the opponent is in contact with a team mate. Officials are going to give the low block, as long as it is a part of the initial line play/charge, even if the QB is in the shotgun.

Well, Bill Dee, you need to take notes then. Mike Smith, you still have my complete respect. It still looks iffy to me but if it's legal then it's okay I guess. I know Edison tried those same tactics last year against Phoebus in the State Championship and they got called for it everytime. This happened directly at the line of scrimmage.

as a former o-lineman i do agree "cut" blocking is ok but the chop or "hi low" should be banned cutting is more of a roadblock scheme meant to take the shins out not the knees...

As long as the contact is simultaneous or the second block is above the knees, it is legal (only line play in the box). Once the free blocking zone is gone, there is no legal block below the waist.

You looking for a negative in the way Hampton is winning by slandering COACH on the way they put a wupping on # 78 for Woodside...You up here bashing the the ALL TIME Winningnest on clearly legal blocking schemes as if you were around when COACH was an assistant back in the mid 1960's...Don't get up here and and slander because you know the " Smackin " is coming...the crabb played a like a better team against Woodside than they did the week before...so if they don't happen to impress you this Friday...then they will go back to work to leave an impression on you the following Friday...you already know what time it is...the team that plays the better defense wins...

Calm down son. It's already been declared that was a legal block. The Mike Smith History Lesson isn't needed. I did reassure that COACH still has my upmost respect. I'm not gon back down from my beliefs either, that the block should be illegal. It's totally illegal in the NFL because the players are paid so much $$$ and it's too much of a major risk. What about HS kids beginning to live their dreams? It's okay for it to be cut out from under them due to a LEGAL form of chop block. Please! RipKlaw you have every right to defend COACH cuz he didn't do anything wrong because it's within the rules. I just read the accusation from another thread up here and I saw the video and it was a case of low blocking. So calm down. Oh yes, we will see each other next week. Right now we got Gloucester on our minds.

..I can't tell that you got Glocester on ya mind..what you should be looking at is playing better defense this week because Phoebus is scrambling on defense...and with that the luck will run out over there.. i see Tron busting a 70 yarder on that defense...he's got one in every game except for the Denbigh game.. but i can't see Anthony or Alston busting a 70 yarder on Hampton's defense...yeah i will speak on it because i know COACH doesn't teach that...sometimes players take it upon themselves doing things within the boundaries, limits, zones, and legalities to keep the advantage in their favor...if i were lined up on you in game talking trash to you, and after the ball is snapped you take me and dump my head into the ground and i get up and get in your face as the whistle is blowing and then you slap my face mask...what do you think i will do next...? absolutely nothing but go back to the huddle because the ref's didn't see what you did to me because you got me first....but you don't know what i'm about to do to you on the next play...As a former player...what i would do...? I would forget about the next play that is called...because what you did to me the play before wasn't football...I would get you back on the next play...i will get you till the whistle blows hoping to draw a penalty on you...you can call it dirty..call it what you want...every play is designed to score a touchdown...

To each's own. I already express my fault for the accusation on COACH Smith. Why do you insist on prolonging a closed chapter? I realize that Phoebus and Hampton just don't get along but it's not personal to me at all. For somebody to have played for the Crabbers in the 80's you take this HIGH SCHOOL stuff too serious. Just this simple, I thought I saw chop blocking on the video but it turned out to be a legal block. Man I apologize, what more do you want? As for Hampton doing this and that to Phoebus and whoever, good for the Crabbers. It's not that serious. If yall win States this year, so be it. I will be rooting for yall if yall make it that far. Like I said before, PHS is focused on Gloucester, I'm sure.
