Tabb bounces back to dump York

By CHRIS LANCIA | Correspondent

YORKTOWN — Tabb’s football team believes last week’s loss to Lafayette was not what their season should be judged by.

The Tigers came out and put on a clinic on both sides of the ball, rolling up 475 yards of offense while giving up just 175 in a 49-14 drubbing of York at Bailey Field on Friday.

"We played a real tough game last week, and it obviously didn’t go the way we wanted it to," said Tabb senior linebacker Corey Pike. "We showed tonight that our season isn’t over just because we lost one game. We opened up our offense tonight and continued to play good defense, but we did a better job of not letting our mistakes overcome our game plan."

The game was essentially over by halftime as Tabb (5-1 overall, 4-1 Bay Rivers District) led 28-0 thanks to a defense that allowed just 22 yards. York crossed the 50-yard line just once, and that came on a Tigers’ fumble.

Corey Legister played just one half for the Tigers, finishing the night with 132 yards and a touchdown on seven carries. His backfield mate, Meltoya Jones, played until midway through the third quarter and finished with 135 yards on 15 carries.

The surprise for Tabb came through an improved passing game, as Sean Case opened it up for a 5-for-7 night for 84 yards and a score.

"We knew we needed to open it up, but the most important thing was that we were able to come out and play good from the start, something we hadn’t been able to do," said Tabb coach Matt Lawson.

"We played well defensively, and we got some guys back and had some guys step up tonight. We’re still on track for 9-1, so we just need to win out and then see what happens."

Nearly all of York’s offense came on one series as the Falcons (2-3, 2-2) gained 83 yards in three plays to score their first touchdown. Most of that came on a screen play that Ben Edwards turned into a 73-yard gain down to Tabb’s 10-yard line.

I sincerely hope the York coaches don't take out their frustration on the kids next week. They should put this loss behind them and make some changes to their game plan. It shouldn't take an entire first half 28-zip to adapt.

What makes you think they were frustrated other than the normal dissapointment of loosing a football game and their intent is to take it out on the team next week? I give them more credit than that.

I'm glad they have your support.

Who is "they" and who else isn't supporting them?

..."they" is the team, including the coaches.

Are you reading some imaginary tone of hostility into my first post then responding in kind?

Without inflection, (and by not including "too" at the end of your sentence) made me think you may not be supporting whomever you were referring to. Hence the question :).

I'm impressed by your repartee. Almost as slippery as deer guts on a doorknob. In a dual of words at ten paces I'd have to turn at nine, unless I drop at eight.

Amen DrPete... at least there's some "full perspective" kind of fans on the Internet!
