I remember reading in the Daily Press special on High School Football predicting Smithfield to finish first in the district, mainly because of Dyrell Roberts. Roberts has seemed to live up to his expectations but his team hasn't done as well ( I mean no disrespect to the rest of the Smithfield team or anyone else). Right now their record, I believe, is 3-2 so I was just was wondering what's wrong with Smithfield? They seem like they have all the tools + 1 to be an elite football team.
I want to know what others from around the district think especially people and players from Smithfield.

You asked; so I'll give my opinion.........
First of all Smithfield is 3-3 not 3-2: Lafayette-L, Tabb-L, and Poq-L
On top of everything else; I witnessed for myself and my math may be a little off because it is hard to cheer, get pissssed, yell at the top of my lungs, and keep all the number in my head; but I counted 10 plays the entire game that DR did not touch the ball. Sure DR looked great in the first half, but by the 2nd half Poquoson made the adjustments neccessary to beat DR (make all the excuses and accusations(sp) you want, but I know what I saw). I have to believe that Smithfield has the talent to do better, but the coaches rely on the kid way too much. Example: bollinger is a stud; however, the Islanders used every weapon they had to win the game. Unfortunately; for the Pack their coaches did not and have not all year used the same phylosophy (3 losses if you want to argue). BTL, DR left, DR right, DR middle, DR spread, DR direct snap.......................it works for a while, but against good teams like Lafayette, Tabb, Poquoson it will beat you in the end. DR may have Div 1 talent, but the coaches have under estimated the rest of their team and the district. It was obvious (in the 2nd half) that the smithfield coaches invested their season in DR.................only to see the playoffs and any chance at a state title dwindle away.
My hat is off to the Islander coaching staff. I have critcized them in the past for not making adjustments, but tonight they did a great job making adjustments and believing in their leaders.
In conclusion..............Three words for the BRD and the State.............Look who's back!!!
We're not in Kansas (0-10) any more.
Great job Islanders............I will not mention any names because this was the ultimate team effort.
PS Okay maybe one name: good luck Cody, we all hope you are OK.

that was the first time i have seen DR this year and i will be honest, last night i actually felt sorry for him. the reason is; i am not sure how many possitive yards the pack had when he didn't touch the ball but it wasn't much. DR, tho he didn't play defense can't be expected to run the ball that much. no one can. even when they passed they still didn't give him a rest cause he was running 50 yard go routes down the field. its only logical that he is gonna have a dominant first half because of his physical superiority. how he even stands up in the second half is commendable he must be in great shape. i understand where some of you smithfield fans are coming from saying that they give him the ball too much but i also understand where the pack coaches are coming from because i saw what happened when he didn't touch the ball.
also if you have a 28-7 lead going into the half you shouldn't lose ever.
What is wrong with Smitfield? Nothing. DR is the real deal and the rest of th TEAM was way, way overrated at the begnning of the season, as proven by their 3 losses already. Stop blaming the coaches and accept the fact that there are other kids and TEAMS in the BRD outside of Smithfield that can really play football!

Cody, it was good to see you up and walking today after being hauled off the field last night with a back problem. Can't wait to see you back on the field next week. It's kind of funny how wrestlers playing Football just kind of stand out as tough kids. Keep up the good work and continue to play your heart out. Actually, I hope that you are not reading stuff on this Forum and someone is just tells you about it. Because talk is cheap. Take care of business on the field.

I will give the coach credit the kids have gotten bigger and stronger from there 10th grade year I will give him credit for that but as far as coaching he is not max out his players talent what you want to see is from 10th grade to 12th grade you have the same players some really good ball players your record should be better If not their is something wrong some where and needs to be fix. I have told people that were bashing the coach to give the man a chance lets see what he can do. Don't hold it against him that he coach at Jamestown and didn't win alot of games they didn't have the same type of players but after watching the team being in the same spot for two years and not as sucessful this year with the same core of players speaks for itself.

I don't want to get in the middle of a "Smithfield" argument but I thought I would relay something I saw during the NK/Lafayette game as some of you might find it interesting. Nk is not having the type of year they had hoped for and in the stands the same types of conversations go on concerning coaches, games plans etc. During the Lafayette game some people decided to make thier opinion's know and did so in a very loud manner. Loud enoguh that the players were able to hear everyone. You could tell, someone spouted off and they would turn thier heads and look back. As the game went on and NK continued to have problems they got louder and more frequent and starting shifting into a much "nastier tone".
The reason I point this out is that about mid way during the 3rd quarter you saw a change happen on the bench, players were arguing with each other, pointing fingers, blaming one another. Kids that had been tight as thiefs all year were now questioning thier coaches and each other. Defense was calling out the offense, questioning thier heart. Offense started arguing amoung themselves. Was not pretty. They finally started to BELIEVE what they were hearing.
Guess my point is whether or not thier is a problem I wouldn't know, but regardless the more it is put into print, talked about, the more the kids will start to wonder themselves, if they start believing as the NK players did, well it will make for a very rough finish to the year. Again not trying to get into the argument. There had been a post on here that based on the way it was written appeared to have come from a Smithfield player. Lynn evidently deleted it but based on what it said it may alreadybe to late, not only did he believe what he had been hearing and reading but he really got in the gutter to attack his coach. Again not trying to argue, just an outside view.

NewKentDad, you make a great point. I've been disappointed with comments I've heard yelled from the stands bad mouthing the coaching staff and especially some of the very pointed attacks on HRVarsity. With that said I'm a bit disappointed with my comment as well. When posting I felt like it was an honest assessment. While not personal in nature it just isn't helpful either...especially realizing the players are reading a bunch of this garbage. Thanks for reminding us that the focus should be on the players first and foremost.
