Bethel bashes Woodside

HAMPTON — In the aftermath of a phenomenal afternoon, Bethel quarterback Aris McGlone-English said all the right things. The offensive line made it possible, the receivers made great catches, the game plan was brilliant. All of which were as right as rain.

Had he been a shameless self-promoter, he could have really gone off. The same kid who never found a groove last year threw for 388 yards and five touchdowns — this despite taking only three snaps in the fourth quarter — as the Bruins hammered Woodside 50-28 Saturday afternoon at Darling Stadium.

In the shotgun with a four-receiver spread all day, McGlone-English completed 20-of-32 passes as Bethel totaled a season-best 527 yards on offense. The win moved Bethel (6-1, 5-1 Peninsula District) into a tie for second place with Hampton.

"We stressed the pass in practice all week because we knew they’d be keying on Jontel (Evans)," said McGlone-English, referring to the Bruins’ tailback.

"But the line was working all day — they were the key to the game. And the receivers came to play. We have the weapons on offense, and this was real fun out here today."

Seven of McGlone-English’s completions went for at least 22 yards. He threw to six different receivers, with Marcus Cooperwood (five catches for 145 yards) and Franklin James (five for 111) doing most of the damage. Evans, who ended up with a season-low 72 rushing yards, caught two of McGlone-English’s five touchdown passes.

"All the receivers on this team have talent, from the first one to the last one," said wideout Antoine Jarvis, who had two TD receptions. "And we finally put it all out there today. The receivers showed what we can do."

That was Bethel coach Jeff Nelson’s game plan.

"Herm Edwards said, ‘It’s all about one-on-one,’ " Nelson said, referring to the Kansas City Chiefs' coach. "That’s what we preach: When it’s one-on-one, you’ve got to win, whether it’s the linemen, the running backs or the receivers."

At one point, the Bruins passed on 13 consecutive downs. And if you count scrambles by McGlone-English when he couldn’t find a receiver, Bethel called passes on its final 28 plays of the first half.

"We knew he threw the ball pretty well, but we felt Evans was such a good back and we wanted to take that threat away," Woodside coach Danny Dodson said. "But we didn’t know (McGlone-English) would have the career game he had today."

Bethel needed it. Woodside (3-4, 2-4) led 28-21 with 5 minutes remaining in the third quarter.

Evans’ 10-yard touchdown run 32 seconds later closed the gap to a point (the PAT was blocked), and McGlone-English then gave the Bruins the lead for good on a 39-yard scoring pass to Cooperwood with 2:08 left in the third.

Bethel is the beast of the PD and this team is going to be taking home the state championship. This team is well coached and knows how to utilize its talents. Coaching makes the difference between champions and just contenders. Bethel's new head football coach is nothing but the truth. HATS OFF.

I'm so interested in seeing what Bethel does in the D-6 playoffs because I know their team is able to beat any given team put in front of them. Every game Bethel won has been a blow out I believe, and I thought that Phoebus-Bethel game was Phoebus slacking off when it was actually just a GREAT Bethel team. I can't believe that I can say that closing out this season I'm looking forward to the Phoebus-Bethel game next season over the Phoebus-Hampton game.

The thing about Bethel is in the playoffs they could face Salem followed by Oscar Smith....WOW. I hope WHCS is planning to go film some Bethel games...hey I'll volunteer to announce them.

I don't see Bethel losing again. I'm thinking Pheobus is glad they've already played them and won't have to play them again. Bethel's new coach has them playing at a really high level. I haven't seen them this good since Iverson was on the team. It will take a really good team to beat them. Sorry Hampton.

People don't understand that Phoebus only beat Bethel 13-6 last season too and it took a late Reid Evans INT to seal the game. But they can beat anyone in the state if they win the region, because they will most likely play 2 championship caliber teams in Salem and Oscar Smith.

Bethel coaches showed how good they really are on Saturday. The first half of that game was back and forth, the coaches went in at halftime and made adjustments, came boack out with a game plan to shut them Wolverines down!

That is the true test of how well a coaching staff is.

I wouls like to start the hype on Bethel's other corner #24 Rijo Walker, he had another key interception Saturday in the end zone killing a drive that would have put Woodside back in the game. He has seven interceptions this season and one touchdown. Oh yea did I mention he is only a sophomore!

The future looks bright for this young man and for the BEthel defense!
