How would Phoebus respond? Try 66-0

HAMPTON — On Menchville’s second play from scrimmage Thursday night, quarterback Clifton Richardson dropped to throw. Dominik Davenport, Phoebus’ 235-pound lineman, broke through. But instead of wrapping Richardson up for the sack, he simply shoved him to the ground. Because, presumably, he could.
That pretty much describes how the next two hours went — the Monarchs trying to compete, but the Phantoms pushing them around. In the end, with the clock running from the 10:50 mark of the third quarter on, it was a 66-0 victory at Darling Stadium in which 10 different Phoebus players accounted for points.
In case anybody was wondering if the Phantoms (8-0, 7-0 Peninsula District) would have much in their tank after last week’s win over arch-rival Hampton High, the answer was yes.
“They did a great job,” Phoebus coach Bill Dee said. “Coming off that game last week, we really try to prepare for every game every week. And the kids really focused on this game. Every kid got in for us, and it was a solid game.”
Phoebus scored on eight of its 10 possessions and never punted.
Quarterback Tajh Boyd completed 9-of-12 passes for 214 yards and three touchdowns. Tailback Shawne Alston, who played last season for Menchville before transferring, rushed for 118 yards against his old school.
Eight players scored touchdowns — fullback Darius McMillan (two), wideout Reid Evans, tight end Daquan Romero, fullback Lavonte Battle (who also had a safety), wideout Jermando Towler, cornerback Markell Wilkins, linebacker Xavier Thompson and Alston. Wilkins’ touchdown came on a 35-yard interception return, Thompson’s on a 27-yard return of a fumble.
Place-kicker Matt Cole had a field goal and six extra points. Backup Eric Crocker became the 10th player to score on a PAT with 1:34 left.
Though Menchville came in with only two wins, Phoebus knew better than to be overconfident. A year ago, the Phantoms played the Monarchs a week before the Hampton game and barely pulled out a 35-28 win.
“That was on our minds all week,” center Robbie Davis said. “We didn’t want a repeat of that. We really played well as a team tonight.”
Menchville finished with 67 total yards, and 40 of that came on its second possession of the game.
When McMillan scored his second touchdown with 10:50 remaining to give the Phantoms a 36-0 lead, the running clock started.
