WHEN: Today. Girls meet begins at 1:30 p.m.; boys begin at 2:15 p.m.
WHERE: Eastern State Hospital Course, Williamsburg. Admission is free.
BOYS’ OUTLOOK: Jamestown is going to be highly competitive at the state level, so retaining their district championship crown should be easy. Junior Andrew Colley is the defending individual champion, and he should be the best in the field again. Last year’s runner-up, Tabb senior Will Mulherin, will bear watching, and the Tigers may slip into one of the four Region I berths at stake. Lafayette’s brother duo of Robert and Macklin Webb, Grafton’s Mike Clark and New Kent’s Eric Lawler should also make their respective teams capable of qualifying for a spot in next week’s regionals.
GIRLS’ OUTLOOK: The girls’ outcome is less predictable than the boys’ event, but of the schools expected to be in the title hunt are the same. Jamestown should be competitive thanks to the leadership of junior Rachel Apostoles, who has a good chance to claim the individual title. Lafayette’s outstanding sophomore, Becky Dobosy, might be among those capable of denying Apostoles. She helps make the Rams a threat. New Kent might enjoy a slight edge on the basis of depth provided by seniors Jaimie Lull and Amanda Fessman, as well as sophomore Kelly Downs. Grafton’s Haley Kopczynski will give the Clippers a shot at earning a regional berth.
