DIARY: Can I get a hot dog here?
By Jason Jordan | jjordan@dailypress.com

How am I still awake??? Am I even typing this or am I dreaming???

Why didn't my high school coach run the last second play for me??? OK now I'm trippin...

Back now, ah yes the diary...

So I roll over out of bed this morning (7 a.m. is much too early to hit the streets) and get ready to head over to Holland Hall to catch up with Samardo Samuels for Sunday's feature.

Imagine my surprise when I open the door and see a blizzard... OK a Virginia blizzard! So I get there and Samardo, rated No. 7 in the class of 08, doesn't disappoint. He's got 16 points, six boards and eight blocks, not to shabby for about three-quarters of a game.

So I'm coming over to talk to him and overhear him jokingly say, "Come on man yall should've gave me the ball in the post more! I'm trying to be in the paper for the top highlights! See yall are selfish that's all!"

Immediately I know this is gonna be a good interview.

A few of the high points of the interview were when he told me about the technical foul he got in his Friday night game ("That ref was a whinning!"), the way he hurt his hamstring in the Saturday morning game ("I missed the shot and I don't do that, so I had to redeem myself!") and the classic line was when he told me why he's cooled his interest in Duke ("They seem like the kind of school that wants you to recruit them.")

So when I leave there it's off to see three more games before lunch... Whew that sausage dog at Phoebus was PRETTY tasty, let me tell you.

But my small meal is interrupted by one of my friends, this is the fifth of the day, that wants to know if "Tyreke's (Evans) game is like that??" I tell him yes and give him the examples of Reke crossing this guy up and shooting a fadeaway three while saving two kittens stuck in a tree, retying his shoes in mid air before ending the war in Iraq and starting the audience's applause for the spectacular play he just made.

"Jay, are you serious!!" my friend pleads.

I hang up and wonder why he's my friend again.

Then I sit up in the stands at Phoebus and check out a few Peninsula District kids on Boo's 16-and-under squad. Menchville big man Marshawn Powell is MAN!

Our intern George Richards tells me that he hates when players argue calls and realizes that he doesn't like Kobe Bryant. I can't relate...

So I debate who will win the boys PD title next year with former Bethel coach Craig Brehon and his assistant coach Chet, who urged me not to be swayed by coaches influence when I do my preseason picks this year... Geez coach I picked Menchville second and they finished first, so sue me... Tough crowd!

From there it's off to check who will be playing where in the quarterfinals tonight... What's this? You don't know? D'oh!!!

OK, OK ... where in the world is an ice cold Coke when you need one. I debate taking up coffee before yawning uncontrollably. The only thing that's got me going at this point is the thought of seeing Team Final's star Tyreke Evans play again.

OK I've got my second wind now.

Off to see this kid Demarcus Cousins, the top sophomore at the tournament. WHEW! He's a beast... I'm sold after the second poster he makes out of a defender.

Ok gotta head back to the office now... Geez that sausage dog was good! But I should've got one for the road, now I've gotta stop by Anna's and grab a slice...

MMM "is this steak?"

Well it's 8 p.m. now and I'm operating on four hours of sleep (blame my girlfriend)

Off to the semis.

They better have those sausage dogs there!
