In the Virginia Independent Schools Division II quarterfinals, goals from Morgan Jones and Regan Murphy boosted Walsingham Academy to a 2-1 home victory over Covenant of Charlottesville
Third-seeded Walsingham advanced to Friday's 3:15 p.m. semifinal against No. 2 Steward of Richmond. That, and the rest of the VIS tournament, will be played at the St. Catherine's Goochland fields, just west of Richmond.
Jones scored her eighth goal of the season 4:07 into the game on a penalty corner off Meredith Soberick's assist. Regan Murphy netted her third goal of the year later in the first half, with Hailey Chohany assisting.
"I kind of knew it would be a defensive game on their end," said Trojans coach Joe Dougherty, noting that Covenant goalkeeper senior Martha Hay is a two-time all-state selection who finished with 21 saves. "She's one heckuva goalie face-up, so we needed to get the ball moving side-to-side."
Sixth-seeded Covenant scored on a penalty corner with 6:40 left, but goalkeeper Ariel Nally, who finished with three saves, and her Walsingham teammates stayed in front.

Kelsey Scherrer's two second-half goals lifted the top seeded Dolphins past the eighth seed in VIS Division II quarterfinal.
Kristen Meredith assisted on both scores for Cape Henry (11-4-1).
They advanced to Friday's 3:15 p.m. semifinal against the Fredericksburg Academy-Carlisle winner.
