The Virginia High School League released its preliminary proposal for realigning the state's high schools for the 2009-10 and 2010-11 seasons. District are adjusted every two years to take into account new schools, changes in enrollments, etc.

Here's how the proposal would affect the three regions that include area schools:

EASTERN REGION: No changes.

REGION I: The preliminary document shows Southampton in the Southside District, as has been rumored. I talked to Littleton Parker, the Southampton athletic director, this morning. He deferred comment to the principal. I'll call her the first of next week. Otherwise the Bay Rivers District would stay the same.

The Battlefield District would gain two schools. Culpeper County is a Group AAA school, but a new school in the county called Eastern View will open. That would lift the Battlefield to eight teams and, if Southampton goes to the Southside, the Bay Rivers would have nine schools and the Southside eight.

REGION A: The only change is that Colonial Beach would move from the Tidewater District to the Northern Neck.

These are preliminary and subject to change. Schools who want to change the plan have to file notice by Dec. 14.

After that, the redistricting committee meets on Jan. 22 to consider modification requests and come up with a revised plan.

The committee then meets on April 14 to consider final appeals. After that, the committee will present its plan to the Executive Committee for final approval in May. The Executive Committee will only vote yes or no on the plan; it won't listen to any appeals.

Where the **** did you get that idea. The Bay Rivers District would stay intact except that Southampton might leave, Tabb would remain a Group AA school, and Indian River and Oscar Smith would remain Group AAA schools.

Prove it.......you've shown absolutely no signs of being capable of carrying on an intelligent conversation - EVER. Proper grammar, punctuation and intelligent thought out posts would help substantiate your claim of not being dumb. So when can we expect to see a better effort from you, Mr....."ummmmm tabb good...you suk"?

That's what I thought - not going to happen in our lifetime.

Lynn,
Do you think they will expand the playoffs in AA? I would hope they would look at that since this 2007.

Gunny, The AD's in each Region make that decision. The VHSL gave the Regions the latitude to make that move, some did, some didn't. The AA Region that made the decision to expand had more teams overall than Region I.

I think expanding to 8 teams would be a bit much since 16 of 25 teams would make the playoffs and you're almost certain to have sub-.500 teams in every year.

Region II, I think it was, expanded to 6 teams in each division this year. The top two seeds got first-round byes, then the other four (3 through 6) played in the first round.

If Southampton does in fact leave the BRD does that mean that every game will be a district game again, like how Tabb played Grafton but it was not a district game?

Nope, it'll mean that you have a regular 9 game district schedule, with all district games counting in the standings. The only reason the Grafton Tabb game didn't count this year in the DISTRICT standings was because SF and SH played Surry and Franklin. If it weren't for those two games the BRD would of had a 10 game district schedule with ALL games counting towards the final district standings.

If Southampton leaves, the BRD would have 10 schools not 9, as earlier stated. Unless another school would be leaving or moving to a new class.

I've also heard rumors of Gloucester eventually building a new HS and that the new school and the existing Gloucester HS would both be AA. Included in the version I heard was that Hampton would build a 5th HS.

Anyone else heard anything like this?

I've heard rumblings, but nothing concrete.

Gloucester is the largest high school in the Peninsula District with 2,029 students, according to the VHSL:

Bethel 1893
Denbigh 1681
Gloucester 2029
Hampton 1654
Heritage (NN) 1688
Kecoughtan 1885
Menchville 1868
Phoebus 1393
Warwick 1790
Woodside 2019

So based on the numbers below a split of Gloucester would put each school in AA territory. And a 5th school in Hampton would still leave enough students (6800/5 = 1360) at each school for all still to be considered AAA.

Hampton schools:
Bethel 1893
Kecoughtan 1902
Hampton 1602
Phoebus 1382

DIVISION 4
Chancellor 1347
Powhatan 1304
Grafton 1297

Tabb 1272
Courtland 1271
