High School Winter Sports Previews: Bay Rivers Wrestling
By CHRIS LANCIA/Correspondent
Bay Rivers District
There’s no clear-cut favorite, but Poquoson opens the season with a positive outlook and a great place in the state rankings. Tabb’s Andrew Williams is the class of the district and is the top-ranked grappler in the state at 119 pounds. He’s one of several outstanding athletes in the district, including top-ranked Chase Ennis of Grafton and sixth-ranked Chase McAdams of Poquoson. Many questions will be answered Jan. 19, when Jamestown hosts a meet that includes Grafton, Poquoson and Lafayette. A favorite may emerge from that meet ready to roll into the sectionals, scheduled for Feb. 16.
TOP THREE TEAMS
® Poquoson: Poquoson has had one of the steadiest programs in the area in recent years, and this year will be no different. The Islanders open the season ranked third in the state.
® Grafton: Ranked seventh in the state, Grafton will lean on Old Dominion-signee Chase Ennis in a run for a district title.
® Tabb: After finishing as the state runner-up a year ago, the Tigers graduated three wrestlers who placed in states but bring back one of the best in the state in Andrew Williams. Williams will provide the leadership to help the newcomers fill the open spots.
TOP THREE INDIVIDUALS
® Andrew Williams, Tabb: Arguably the best wrestler in the area a year ago, Williams returns to lead the Tigers and seeks his second straight state crown at 119 pounds.
® Chase Ennis, Grafton: The top-ranked wrestler in the state at 171 pounds, Ennis finished as the state-runner up last year and has already signed a letter of intent to wrestle for Old Dominion. Entering his senior season, his career record sits at 133-20.
® Chase McAdams, Poquoson: Ranked sixth in the state at 160 pounds, McAdams will be the driving force behind Poquoson’s success.
