Runner of the Year
ANDREW COLLEY, JUNIOR, JAMESTOWN

By Dan Maher
Colley also earned this honor in 2006, when he stood out by winning Bay Rivers District and Region I championships.

In 2007, he retained his district title with ease, outrunning second-place finisher Will Mulherin of Tabb by 28 seconds to record a time of 15 minutes, 15 seconds at the Eastern State Hospital 5-kilometer course.

While Mulherin exacted some revenge by stripping Colley of his Region I crown the following week, Colley still finished third in the region.

Colley then anchored Jamestown’s third-place team finish with a runner-up individual finish in the Group AA state championships at Great Meadow near Warrenton.

He posted a time of 15:19 to finish just three seconds behind Blacksburg’s Peter Dorrell and improve on last year’s sixth-place finish by 1 minute, 15 seconds.

Colley further asserted himself as the area’s top runner by twice bettering the Peninsula District’s best, Douglas Fenstermacher of Gloucester, when
they ran the same course.

Colley was 25 seconds faster than Fenstermacher on the state-meet course and 49 seconds ahead while finishing second at the William & Mary Invitational.

First team

ORLANDO BURTON
Year: Junior. School: Heritage.

Even though Burton lacked a push from quality teammates in practice on an undermanned Hurricanes squad, he finished second in the Peninsula District and seventh in the Eastern Region to qualify for the Group AAA state meet, where he was the district’s second-best finisher in 60th.

DOUGLAS FENSTERMACHER
Year: Senior. School: Gloucester.

Fenstermacher was the only Peninsula District runner under 16 minutes at the championship meet, winning in a time of 15:59. He also broke 16 minutes while winning the Eastern Region in 15:51 and when finishing second at the Chesapeake Invitational (15:59). He posted a 12th-place finish at the Group AAA state championships.

DAVID GERLACH
Year: Sophomore. School: Menchville.

Gerlach stood out as the best on a promising young Menchville squad with a third-place finish in the Peninsula District championships and a 12th-place finish at the Eastern Region meet that landed him on the all-region team and qualified him for the Group AAA state championships.

JOHN HOLT
Year: Junior. School: Jamestown.

Holt highlighted his season by slipping past Colley to finish second in the Region I championships. That came on the heels of third place in the Bay Rivers District championship and preceded finishing 23rd at the Group AA state competition.

WILL MULHERIN
Year: Senior. School: Tabb.

Mulherin went out on a high note, rounding into excellent form in the postseason. He sandwiched the Region I championship between solid performances as runner-up in the Bay Rivers District championships and third place finisher at the Group AA state meet.

CHRIS SCHULZ
Year: Senior. School: Walsingham Academy.

Schulz ran well in a competitive Tidewater Conference of Independent Schools championship meet, finishing fourth. He also performed well in the independent schools Division II state championships, where he came in eighth, and the state Catholic championships, where he was fourth.
