FIRST TEAM OFFENSE


QUARTERBACK: Tajh Boyd, Phoebus, junior
Completed 69 percent of his passes for 2,046 yards and 25 touchdowns with six interceptions. Signature game came when he rallied Phoebus from a 27-20 deficit in the fourth quarter for a 30-27 win over Bethel.



RUNNING BACK: Jontel Evans, Bethel, junior
New-look Bruins’ offense didn’t rely on him as heavily as in ’06, but he still responded with a monster season. Rushed for 1,518 yards and averaged 7.3 per attempt. Also ran for 23 touchdowns.




RUNNING BACK: Tron Martinez, Hampton, junior



Everyone knew he would be getting the call, but he was a tough man to stop. Led the district with an average of 136.6 yards per game. Also averaged 6.1 per carry and rushed for 24 touchdowns.



RUNNING BACK: Shawne Alston, Phoebus, junior



Though hurt for most of the season, he ran for 1,684 yards and 26 touchdowns and emerged as Phoebus’ next great tailback. Rushed for 495 yards in Phantoms’ first three playoff games.



LINE: Dominik Davenport, Phoebus, junior



Helped pave the way for an offense that averaged 36 points and 339 yards a game. Relentless blocker who has the size to take on other linemen and the quickness to handle linebackers.



LINE: Daryl Cooper, Woodside, senior



A four-year starter for the Wolverines at center, where he was a dependable trigger-man. A team captain his last two seasons.



LINE: Dustin Hornsby, Smithfield, senior



Led an offensive line that opened holes for Dyrell Roberts, the fourth running back in both the Peninsula and Bay Rivers District to eclipse 2,000 rushing yards during the regular season. The Packers had one of the top running games in the Bay Rivers District.



LINE: Trent Boullianne, Poquoson, senior



Improved the Islanders pass blocking scheme, and as a result, quarterback Eric Nixon went from throwing 668 passing yards in 2006 to more than 1,500 this season. Boullianne gave Nixon time to help the Islanders post the top passing game in the Bay Rivers District.



LINE: Mike Gorenc, Tabb, senior



Opened holes for two of the top running backs in the Bay Rivers District — Corey Legister and Mel Jones. Gorenc plowed through opposing defensive lines and helped the Tigers post the No. 2 rushing offense in the district.



RECEIVER: Reid Evans, Phoebus, senior



Became the third Peninsula District receiver to pass 1,000 receiving yards in season. Caught 68 passes for 1,135 yards and eight touchdowns.



RECEIVER: Justin Bollinger, Poquoson, senior



Though it was his first year playing, Bollinger finished the season with more than 550 receiving yards and seven touchdowns. Bollinger created matchup problems for defensive secondaries because of his athleticism.



TIGHT END: Kendall Charles, Poquoson, senior



This was also Charles’ first year playing football, but he came through like a veteran, racking up more than 530 receiving yards and eight touchdowns. Charles’ most memorable game was against Smithfield when he caught two late fourth-quarter touchdowns to help the Islanders pull off a-from-behind win.



PLACE-KICKER: Matt Bevins, Warwick, senior



Made 11 field goals in 13 attempts this season, including a 48-yarder against Bethel in the season’s second week. Was virtually automatic on extra points and affected field position with deep kickoffs.



FIRST TEAM DEFENSE



LINE:


William Jefferson, Hampton, senior


Steady performer who was equally capable at rushing the passer and stopping the run. Didn’t bring overwhelming size but always seemed to be in on every play.



LINE: Tyrel Wilson, Hampton, junior



Crabbers’ coaches don’t keep individual defensive statistics, but 15 sacks is a conservative estimate. Rangy (6-3/220) end who is as quick as a lot of tailbacks.



LINE: Will Hill, Lafayette, junior



Helped the Rams post the top defense in the region, holding teams to just 6.7 points per game and 168 yards of total offense. Hill reeked havoc on offensive tackles and racked up more than 60 tackles this season.



LINE: Keith Person, Grafton, senior



Person helped Grafton hold teams to just 206 yards of offense. His most memorable game was against Poquoson when he came up with two key sacks in the second half to help the Clippers win.



LINEBACKER: Derek Mayo, Kecoughtan, senior



The bright spot of an otherwise-disappointing season for the Warriors with 105 tackles, three fumble recoveries and one interception, which he returned for a touchdown.



LINEBACKER: Zach Stillwell, Lafayette, senior



Stillwell was one of the playmakers on the Rams’ defense, which held teams to just 6.7 points per game and 168 yards of total offense. Often known for pressuring quarterbacks on blitzes and running down backs, Stillwell was a force.



LINEBACKER: Darius McMillan, Phoebus, senior



Taking over the role Haroon Brown served last season, he was the Phantoms’ leader with 147 tackles, including 14 for a loss of yardage. Intercepted two passes and recovered a pair of fumbles.



DEFENSIVE BACK: Marcus Cooperwood, Bethel, senior



A terrific cover corner with a knack for the ball. Picked off 10 passes this season, which is amazing enough, but he returned five of them for touchdowns.



DEFENSIVE BACK: T.J. Ptachick, Lafayette, senior



Named the Bay Rivers District’s defensive Player of the Year, Ptachick came up with big plays seemingly during every game this season. His made the game-winning interception in the final seconds against Smithfield.



DEFENSIVE BACK: Garrick Piggott, Lafayette, senior



Piggott patrolled the defensive secondary and helped the Rams post one of the top pass defenses in the Bay Rivers District, allowing just 72 yards a game. Piggott was very strong at shedding the blocker and finding the ball.



DEFENSIVE BACK: Paul Shaw, Hampton, senior



Also emerged as a dependable receiver toward the end of the season, but made his mark as a shut-down corner. Outstanding athlete who showed a knack for the ball and an ability to hit.



PUNTER: Matt Mares, Lafayette, senior



Mares served as a valuable weapon on special teams, pinning opponents deep into their own territory by averaging more than 40 yards on punts.

Good list overall. I'm a little surprised Lovell wasn't the first team tight end, considering he was the consensus first team for the All Peninsula District team.

Still, good choices overall.

Not having Richard Anthony, Heritage, senior on the first team was a bit strange sense I believe he lead the district in rushing during the regular season. But you can't argue the three that made the 1st team. And all are juniors. :clap2:

I think there is a problem with that because even with an undersized line Anthony still got the district rushing title and not to say the others didnt deserve it but i think he deserved it over at least 1 of the others

Yeah I agree the top 3 backs this year were Anthony, Evans, and Martinez. Not saying Alston of Phoebus wasn't a top back this year it's just that those 3 aforementioned names had teams that depended on their success to win games. Anthony was obviously the most elusive back in the district running behind that undersized line, but not better than Evans because he was easily the best back this year and Martinez was too small to do anything against stronger and bigger teams and it's safe to call Alston a system running back.

The game this year has gotten a lot of criticism because of who was and who was not invited. It seems like its the Notre Dame invitational. Many of the top players at each position are not there. Several of those are there have already verballed to the Irish, and they're not even in the top 30 nationally at their position.

Who were the best offensive and defensive players on Phoebus this past year? Hint, they are the PD players of the year. BTW, they were both juniors. Therefore, NEITHER of them would play in any all-star games this season.

They may have been invited to the other High School all-star game... which was played at the exact same time, and had a number of kids in it from VA. The guy from Stone Bridge was there (shockingly), so was the QB from Westfield and from Bayside.

Running back commits to Hokies


A stacked depth chart of running backs at Virginia Tech didn't scare off Ryan Williams, who committed Saturday to Tech at the U.S. Army All-American game in San Antonio......Several football recruiting services consider him one of the nation's top five running back prospects.....Williams, who scored on a 75-yard touchdown reception in the All-American game, is one of the top three recruits in Tech's '08 class.

Once again, this just proves that Oldschook is clueless about what he's always jaw-jacking about....:eek:
