George Sheppard, the 2007 160-pound Group AAA state champion from Menchville, has reached the semifinals at 157 pounds at the Midwest Classic at the University of Indianapolis. Sheppard, a true freshman wrestling for NAIA Campbellsville (Ky.), was seeded third and reached the semis after two wins on Friday. In the opening round, Sheppard topped Gavin Nelson of Augustana (S.D.) 6-1 before beating Eric Pretto of SIU-Edwardsville 9-7. Sheppard will face Ashland’s Muhammad Abdur-Rahman in Saturday’s semifinals. Other wrestlers of note were Virginia Beach native and Kempsville grad Arsenia Barksdale of Division II Adams State (Colo.) reaching the semis at 125 pounds. Deep Creek graduate Glenn Jackson of Campbellsville lost his 197-pound quarterfinal to Findlay’s Dan Stevenson 4-2.
