HAMPTON -- Heading into the heavyweight match Friday afternoon, Great Bridge held a 32-28 edge over Eastern Regional (N.J.), a hard-fought advantage gained in the heavier weight classes.
But Kris Deichert only needed 40 seconds to end the Wildcats' semifinal hopes, pinning Jim Carter to give the Vikings a 34-32 win in the Virginia Duals at the Hampton Coliseum.
Eastern Regional took a 19-7 lead after Hand Stinson (135) pinned Jules Whitehurst just 34 seconds into the match. But a pin by Louis Johnson (140) and a 13-1 major decision by Joey Grainger helped the Wildcats claw back in.
Daymein Scott won a 7-5 decision over T.J. Snukis in the 160-pound match to give the Vikings a 28-23 lead, but Great Bridge won the next three matches -- a pin by Robby Mello in the 171, an 11-3 major from Alan Clamp (189) and a Billy Curling technical fall in the 215 -- before the pivotal heavyweight bout.
Great Bridge will take on the winner of the Fauquier-Cox consolation match 10 a.m. on Saturday, while Eastern Regional advances to face top-seeded St. Mark's (Del.) in the semifinals at 2 p.m.
