1. What are the must-see games?
Next week is a monster, with dates featuring the teams that began this week with just three losses. Lafayette (10-3 district) is at Bruton (10-3) on Feb. 5, Poquoson (9-3) is at Bruton on Feb. 7, and Lafayette is at Poquoson on Feb. 9. Surging York (9-4) plays two big games this week: at home against Southampton (8-5) on Thursday, and at Lafayette on Saturday.
2. Who are the bubble teams?
Seven teams are cinches to make the eight-team district tournament. Grafton (4-9) and Jamestown (3-10) are battling for the eighth spot. They meet Feb. 5 at Jamestown.
3. How does the individual scoring race shape up?
Bruton forward Jen Falin moved solidly to the front of the pack last week with outbursts of 30, 26 and 32 points. She’s averaging 18.9 points, well ahead of Lafayette’s Addie Williams (16.9) and Southampton’s Anita Ricks (16.7).
4. Who is the best bet to win the regular season?
Anyone have a Ouija board? Poquoson entered the season as the favorite. Bruton appeared to be the team to beat through the early weeks. Lafayette opened up a two-game lead at the halfway point — thanks in part to wins over Bruton and Poquoson — then lost to middle-of-the-pack Southampton and Tabb. Bruton, Lafayette and Poquoson begin this week with three district losses each, and it might take a playoff to decide the title.
District tournament
The Bay Rivers District boys tournament is scheduled for Feb. 18, 20 and 22. The girls tournament is Feb. 19, 21 and 23. The higher seed is host for the quarterfinals and the final and the highest remaining seed hosts both semifinals.
