YORK - Connie Minnick said Tuesday that her tenure as athletic director at Tabb High will end at the close of this school year. Minnick, who has held the position since 1997, said that Tabb principal Laura Abel did not ask her to return.

Minnick declined further comment. Abel said county policy does not allow her to speak publicly about personnel matters, but added that the York County School Board has posted the Tabb athletic director position as an anticipated opening.

Minnick said she will continue to work in York County next school year as a teacher. Minnick, in her 38th year as a teacher in the county, does not know where she'll be teaching.

"I've e-mailed our coaches to let them know," Minnick said of her pending departure as Tabb athletic director. "It's official."

Minnick, a former softball and basketball coach at York Middle School, said she does not expect to return to coaching with her next position. She'll spend more time at home.

"I've enjoyed my time as athletic director," she said. "To do this job you have to love it and you have to like the kids. But all of the night activities are time away from home.

"Often, to see my husband (Terry), he'd have to bring me dinner at the school."

Minnick expressed pride in numerous accomplishments as AD. She spearheaded the implementation of parents' nights for each season, a parent-student handbook and a sportsmanship award for each sport.

She joked that she was computer illiterate upon taking the Tabb AD job. These days, Tabb schedules are posted on the Internet and parents receive e-mails when games are postponed or canceled. Directions to opposing schools are also listed now on the school Web site.

Minnick represents Region I on the Virginia High School League Executive Committee. Jamestown athletic director Judi Brinsfield will replace her.
