A three-way tie for the Bay Rivers District girls basketball regular-season title is a distinct possibility.

If that happens, a two-day playoff Friday and Saturday will decide the top seed in next week’s district tournament, as well as two of the Bay Rivers’ three berths into the Region I tournament.

The final week of regular-season play commences today with three teams tied at four losses apiece in district play: Lafayette (15-4), Bruton (14-4) and Poquoson (14-4). If each wins its remaining regular-season games, they’ll finish 16-4 in district play and tie for the regular-season title.

The first playoff game would be held between Lafayette and Poquoson at 7 p.m. Friday in the Bruton High gymnasium. Bruton gets a bye in the first playoff round because it picked a lower number in a preseason district draw.

Bruton would play the Lafayette-Poquoson winner at 7 p.m. Saturday for the top seed in the district tournament. If Bruton’s opponent Saturday is Lafayette, the game will be played in Warhill High’s gymnasium.

If Bruton’s opponent is Poquoson, the game will be played in Grafton High’s gymnasium.
Saturday’s winner is the No. 1 seed in the district tournament and Saturday’s loser is the No. 2 seed. Both advance to the regional. Friday’s loser is the No. 3 seed in the district tournament and advances to the regional unless a lower seed wins the district tournament.

If only two teams tie for the regular-season title, a one-game playoff will be held Saturday to decide the top seed in the district tournament. The site for the playoff will be announced Friday.
