The full write-up from the first day of the Eastern Region tournament should be up soon; I just sent it into the office. In the meantime, here are some tidbits from the day:
-After the quarterfinal round, Great Bridge holds the team lead with 90 points. Menchville is the highest-placing Peninsula District team in 8th, while Hampton sits 11th.
-Ronnie Thacker is not wrestling, giving up his spot in the 112-pound bracket. He aggravated his calf injury in the district final last weekend, and he's so emotionally spent from the death of his father that he couldn't go.
-Sal Leonardi (135) left in the first round with a sprial fracture in his right leg.
-Odis Wesby (135), Tony Pizzo (145), D.J. Carlomany (152), Brian Delgrosso (160) and Colin Lenhardt (171) have all advanced to Saturday's semifinal round. A win would qualify these wrestlers for next week's state tournament at Oscar Smith.
-Though Carlomany was the only Crabber to advance to the semifinals, 10 Hampton wrestlers are in the running for a top-four finish. Finishing in the top four gets you a trip to the state tournament.

They both lost in the first round today, and are now fighting it out in the consolation bracket hoping to finish third or fourth. All four PD heavyweights fell in the first round today.

Depending on how the last round of consolation matches went (I had to leave while they were still going on to make deadline), Warwick's Key might face off against Battle and Gloucester's Kirby could square off against Pavusa. Should that be the case, the PD still isn't guaranteed a heavyweight placing -- tomorrow's semifinals will put two more Southside wrestlers into the consolations rounds, fighting for third and a state slot. Should be interesting, that's for sure.
