Forbes unleashes area's second-best long jump ever
By Daniel Maher| Correspondent

Shakia Forbes of Bethel found another stage for her long jump talent, setting the meet record at the Taco Bell Classic in Columbia, S.C. last weekend with a jump of 19 feet, 8 inches, nearly eight inches longer than the previous meet record. While principally attended by South Carolina schools, the meet brought together more than 50 schools from the Mid-Atlantic and the Deep South.

According to Daily Press records, that’s the second-longest long jump in Peninsula high school history. Forbes is surpassed only by Menchville’s Yvette Lewis, who leaped 19-10 ¾ in the 2003 Eastern Region meet.

Hampton’s star hurdler Tierra Brown was denied a win in the girls 100-meter hurdles when Pendleton, S.C., freshman sensation Jasmine Stowers set a meet record with a time of 13.89. Brown finished second with a time of 13.99. She finished third in the 400-meter hurdles. Bethel’s Kayla Campbell also recorded a third-place finish in the shot put.

Among local boys, Bethel’s Sherrard Marrow and Hampton’s Lavell Handy stood out with second place finishes in the 400 meters and triple jump, respectively. Marrow’s time of 48.51 seconds left him just five-hundredths of a second behind the winner.

Bethel’s girls finished ninth in the team competition and the Crabbers finished twelfth. The Bruins were 14th in the boys events, while only Handy scored points for Hampton, leaving them in 31st.

Phoebus’ girls picked up two individual wins at last weekend’s Gus Lacy Track Classic at Fork Union. Niaimani Aduma captured the 400 meters in a clocking of 59.21 seconds and Stormy Holt won the 200 meters with a time of 26.68 seconds.

Those wins lifted Phoebus to ninth among the more than 20 schools participating. The Phantoms boys squad finished tenth.

Lafayette was the only other local school participating. The Rams finished 18th in the girls portion of the meet, while its boys came in 16th.

This Saturday, the Peninsula Relays will be held at Darling Stadium. Events get under way at 9 a.m.
