The eighth-seeded Clippers seemed on the verge of a big upset, leading by 10 in the third quarter at Bruton. But the Panthers came back behind BRD player of the year Jen Falin's 20 points, as well as 16 points and 10 rebounds from freshman Sharmayne Baker. They took the lead for good with a little more than two minutes remaining.
Bruton used pressure defense to force turnovers and outscore Grafton 21-10 in the final quarter. A pair of free throws each by Falin and reserve Luci Legaspi clinched the victory.
The Clippers hit seven 3-pointers. Grafton's Jasmine Williams-Hayes scored 15 points, Sydney Beasley 14 and junior-varsity call-up Jessica Ponce 10.
Bruton coach Wayne Burnette said, "You have to be mentally and physically ready to play every night. I was hoping our kids weren't looking past the district tournament."
Of Grafton's shooting, he added, the Clippers "weren't missing anything. They were hot; they were shooting extremely well. Jasmine Williams-Hayes is such a good penetrator. She forces the defense to her and then kicks it."
With a little more than two minutes to go, Bruton took the lead for good.
